Both Brian Fargo and the Digital Antiquarian have used the term 'blobber' (the latter initially assuming it was a contemporaneous term coined by the mainstream gaming press). That's not too shabby.

This subgenre consists of RPGs where the player leads a party of adventurers in first-person perspective, typically through a dungeon or labyrinth in a grid-based environment. Games of this type are also known as "blobbers", since the player moves the entire party around the playing field as a single unit, or "blob". Most "blobbers" are turn-based, but some such as the Dungeon Master, Legend of Grimrock and Eye of the Beholder series are played in real-time.

yeah that's why it's called "Category:Blobbers"
oh, wait...

I can refute your entire non-argument just by pointing to this: https://www.dungeoncrawlers.org/
https://www.dungeoncrawlers.org/definition/

https://www.dungeoncrawlers.org/definition/
Note: This definition is the subjective opinion of dungeoncrawlers.org and may not correlate with other peoples idea of a dungeon crawler.

:hmmm:

They used to be called dungeon crawlers, but then a bunch of pseudo-iso and first-person single-character dungeon crawlers were also released that played differently and it no longer became a useful term.

imagine giving up a definition that works for a retarded non-term "blobber" just because some other new games were released

I normally prefer "dungeon crawler" over "blobber", but it's just weird to call open world explorers like the Might & Magic games dungeon crawlers. So it's a decent enough replacement for the unwieldy description "first-person party-based RPG" in everyday speech.

Now explain why Lords of Xulima isn't a blobber.

Sometimes Codexers will describe games as having "blob combat" without being full-on blobbers. That may answer your question.

So you agree that most JRPGs are in fact blobbers?
Because lords of xulima functions nearly identical to many jrpgs.

I like blobber, it's funny. Terms just stick sometimes. They're seldom perfect. People have sperged over metroidvania relentlessly to no avail. Prescriptive speech doesn't work unless you're French.

"Dungeon crawling" is any combat-centric RPG activity set in dungeons, and has been since the days of Gygax and Arneson.

Blobbers is a term which doesn't exist, but is pushed by autistic neckbeards on the Codex for some reason. They must think they're super witty and smart.

Dungeon crawlers may not be the perfect term for it, but it isn't a meaningless garbage term like "blobbers".

Trying to force this term is not going to work. It's too stupid and too cringeworthy.

Besides, if "dungeon crawlers" is "is any combat-centric RPG activity set in dungeons", then why aren't they "hack and slashers"? That's just as descriptive.

Stay mad. Blobber doesn't describe the activites, but it does describe the combat and movement style (your group moves and acts as a single blob).

You actually quoted wikipedia unironically.

Cope some more, but spare me the bullshit attempts.

This is not a term, sorry. It's made up garbage.

If anything, your anemic examples just confirm it's a weakly forced meme and nothing is as cringy as a forced meme.

Terms stick sometimes, but this isn't an example of it.

Both Brian Fargo and the Digital Antiquarian have used the term 'blobber' (the latter initially assuming it was a contemporaneous term coined by the mainstream gaming press). That's not too shabby.

When the term is found on the back of a box, claiming the game is "the most awesome blobber since Dungeon Master", I'll concede the term has any merit. But it doesn't, because it isn't a real thing, it's a forced thing.

FPS, RPG, RTS, Rogue-light, dungeon-crawler, etc. those are real terms. Blobber is just bullshit.

Language is a social construct.

Exactly and people don't use the term. It isn't socially accepted.

Just because you don't understand social interaction, you can't skip that step. People do not use this term to describe their own games.

Not with that attitude! Blobber blobber blobber blobber.

You know that feeling when you repeat a word so often it starts to sound meaningless. Blobber manages to do that without repeating it! Impressive, in a way.

imagine being this upset about a moniker

denomination is a great substitute for substance if you have no valuable input for the latter

"these interesting mechanics, this interesting idea, this great story, this fantastic atmosphere, this cool take on a central gameplay element"

"yes yes, but do we designate it a or b? that seems a much more important question!"

As you've probably noticed, I tend to prefer story-based RPGs over dungeon blobbers and the like.

First, it re-invented the "blobber" gameplay the series was known for. Instead of a party advancing square by square as a single blob

Making a book about first person dungeon crawlers: DRPGs, blobbers, gridders.

Grimoire is an homage to the classic dungeon blobbers and is inspired by Wizardry, Might & Magic, Lands of Lore, Anvil of Dawn, DungeonMaster and the Eye of the Beholder games!

You seem to be upset that it is accepted.

They are. Both terms are interchangeable. That's why attempts to appropriate "hack and slash" for diablow clones exclusively is likewise an example of malicious revisionism.

Not really. Every computer RPG up until well into 1980s was a "dungeon crawler", many of them topdown and featuring a single character. Pretending that "dungeon crawling" requires first person view and a party of characters is not "no longer useful", it would have been false from day one.
