Have you looked at the Mount&Blade system of distribution (ie, selling a beta as shareware)? Since your system is dynamical or emergent and less top-down it would seem polishing will be more about small balance changes and fixes once the main engine is in depth. On the other hand Mount&Blade had a large potential target market (it's an action game), which Shelter may not.
