Skyway, will you please, please, please learn to play a game, or at least get some idea about it, before you spew this kind of bullshit again? Pretty please? with sugar on top?

That said...

You are correct that, compared to Far Cry, Doom3 engine is pathetic at open areas, Prey or no Prey.

You should've just written "you are correct". I've played through the whole demo of Prey which was, very surprisingly, whole 4 hours long and open areas were something it didn't have. And yes Far Cry-like open areas is exactly what I've meant by open areas.

BTW have you tried the "AMD64 patch" for Far Cry? The name's misleading (it works just fine on Intel 64-bit processors), but it adds foliage and improves graphic quality in a number of ways. It's a hefty download and replaces some textures with higher res versions, and overall the game looks even better than originally did. With the patch and everything maxed out it's pure scenery porn, even 6 years later. It digs and even wider gap betweee Doom3 engine and FC engine.

I only tried 1.3 patch that added HDR, I didn't know there was another patch, thanks for the info.

That bike section would be great if it were tuned and focused around a new Road Rash game instead of a glorified FMV sequence.

in modern linear shooters you just advance and shoot, taking some cover.

In doom you had to constantly move dodging miriad of stuff thrown at you, sometimes you found yourself in ambushes and had to use your rockets carefully (there is a part where you are surrounded by gattling gun zombies, and you have to use your rockets in the right way or they will rape you before you can kill them all). You had to use some strategy every now and then, pitting monsters against one another and so on.

Sometimes in the middle of a difficult battle more enemies would spawn, forcing you to prioritize targets while avoiding the massive amount of shit enemies where throwing at you.

And the level where much less linear, they were not a series of corridors with cover point and cutscene points.

No. A gigantic room several kilometers on each side, with 2 spherical planetoids (each generating its own gravity), each over a 100m in radius, is NOT my idea of "long linear corridors with max 100m open areas." There were several such open spaces in the game. I did not play the demo so I have no idea where it starts and where it ends, but the open areas are there.

You'll need to install the first one, then the 2nd one to get the higher res stuff. For some weird reason Crytek then released a 1.4 patch the can update from the regular 1.3, but not the 64-bit patch, so avoid that and stick to 1.32 (the patch I just linked)
Here's a link showing some screenshot difference: http://www.anandtech.com/show/1677/3
Biggest difference (that I forgot to mention) is with distance. Notice how much crisper the far textures are, especially in the day levels.

Well, no what I meant was the ego or at least gratification of the player himself. It's not a bad thing, I mean we go through the trouble of defeating a challenge in a video game not because we expect a monetary reward, but because of the sense of accomplishment.

I don't. I play for the gameplay hence I often don't finish games I guess. If the game is too easy then it gets rather boring as you don't even need to focus on it, game has to be intrinsically interesting for me. It is also not just the difficulty I dislike arrows that point where I need to go, not because finding shit, and not getting lost is challenging but because it requires some focus, keeping track of what is going on in the gameworld. This makes the exploration more interesting.

But see that isn't an open area. That's just a room with two planetoids.
Perhaps I should clarify: open outdoor areas. Was not capable of doing them.
