I think it has long been documented that the AI is lacking. On both parts of the game. If anything the battle AI was best in their first and last game, while the strategic AI was best in their first two games because of how the strategic layer was setup then. AI couldn't handle the free movement.

The chessboard style strategic map of the first game had arguably more depth in its simplicity, than the move unit stacks across a landmap animated strat-map that the newer games have. Probably because AI functions more effectively when it is moving entire armies at once, rather than small stacks.

Wonder what sort of civil war mechanics they will use. Just rip in the Shogun II system of your peers getting more jealous of you? Optimates and Populares faction system?

They have civil war mechanic in Shogun 2?The system in the original Medieval was pretty cool.

Shogun 2 AI was quite good actually. I even lost one game on hard(first one though, but still...)
