Outside of small indie companys, will we ever see games like Baldurs Gate 2, Fallout or Planescape: Torment again?

Isometric CRPGs (as in , true RPGs and not action-based)? Nope, not a chance. Dead and buried.

That's a great pity. Isometric view builds the same level of bond with one's characters as one has with a chess piece.

From big publishers , never, dragon age was the last, dragon age 2 will be much closer to mass effect2 wich is a shooter with story.
Its the same for space 4X, deep strategy wargames, adventure games. The future will be facebook games on the pc/mac/iphone anything with a browser or shooters on cloud servers you will be able to play them on anything with internent connection, even your frickin fridge, home consoles will disappear, most paper magazines will too.
What will be left ? Some starved indies managing to get a few sales while 99% of people torrent them , most of their games mediocre with sometimes a rough gem or two.True gaming like we knew it, is bound to disappear.

DA:O is your game.

Yep. Even 3D games can have 2D overhead views. Just look at GTA3. I hated it when they took out the classic camera angle in Vice City. You lost that birds eye view of the road.

Yup, which is the best kind of bond there is. :smug:

That's really sad Bioware / Obsidian haven't had the same "politics" as Blizzard concerning their games.
Basically, Blizzard keeps whatever worked well and what people liked in their games and try to improve the whole stuff by small touches. They added the 3D, but kept the Iso 3D POV, because they knew that introducing 3D to the gameplay would completely change it, and worse, if nothing done, break it. ( StreetFighter 4 is a good example too ).
If only Bioware and especially Obsidian, had this vision, we would have had excellent RPGs, at least for those who liked BG. But now, it's clear that as long as they don't radically change their politic ( I hope the Witcher2 will oblige them to make some step further in the good direction ), that will get worse and worse.

My first thought was: "Someone resurrected some thread from mid 2000s". I am really getting a deja vu here.

Blizzard(or Capcom) cares about gameplay, mainstream rpg developers believe that we play their games because we want romances :x

Ehm dragon age is unplayable if you only use isometric view. The view distance is too small and you can't move the camera freely.

I remember rotating every 2 seconds the camera in the dungeons in NW2 to be sure I was not missing some door / ennemy whatever.
Come on ! Is this part of the gameplay? This is just fucking up 50% of the fun of a game.

This.

Anyway, there's Broken Hourglass - a BG2-like game being done by some of the people who were working on the most promising BG2 TCs - DLTC and Return to Windspear.

"The Tolmiran Empire is often called "The Empire Of Man" by historians. While this is arguably racist..."

No thanks. I don't want another fantasy setting populated by people from 21st century San Francisco. I've already got DA:O. :smug:
