Child of Light developer Ubisoft has revealed new details of the project, which is destined for release next year on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

The platforming RPG focuses on a young flame-haired princess named Aurora, a girl trapped in a waking dream.

The game is the work of Far Cry 3 director Patrick Plourde, and is being built using UbiArt - Ubisoft Montpellier's Rayman engine.

Child of Light is designed to look a like a moving watercolour painting - a fairytale legend come to life.

A second player can join in co-op play as Igniculus, a fiery blue orb. He can aid in battles by blinding enemies and interrupting them during their attacks, collecting items and healing party members. Outside of battle he can discover hidden areas and treasure.

Ubisoft's trailer, below, shows off Child of Light's world, characters and the game's turn-based JRPG-style battles.

Looks like a pretty neat game, would like to play it. Ubisoft sure has their shit together lately, they're making a lot of cool new ip. This, Valiant Hearts, Watch Dogs, The Division, The Crew. Not bad.

sure feels weird when a bigass publisher know for its moronic drm does stuff like that or rayman origins.... it's almost like some people there have common sense and talent...

This, like MM10, is still attached to Ubisoft's terribad DRM client right?

When will they learn that COSTS them sales?

Well, either that or they realized that they could make safe money on dry markets with small investments.

...hmm, you know, that's exactly what I was told at Gamescom. Though of course they put a positive flip on it. But this is basically what's happening :)

Ubisoft have always been very market savvy, while retaining a degree of intelligence and open mindedness that their peers seem to lack. This is why they can have a hit, triple-A action game set in Jerusalem during the Crusades, while the competition never leave the safe video game harbors of sci-fi and medieval fantasy. And they still have some real game development talent, so they can turn around and put out smaller, gamey games like Rayman.

So it's not surprising that they are doing a JRPG type game with Rankin-Bass watercolor visuals.

so i guess them drying out those markets in the first place all part of the master plan to make more money...

they weren't. before rayman origins it was all about them ramping up their shitty always on/part of the code on the fucking servers drm including typical shit comments about it and churning out triple-a shit on pc/consoles and raving rabbids sequels.

something changed (for the better) between the last ubi drm debacle and rayman origins.

My first thought was, "Why does Princess Bubblegum look so weird?"

Anyway, doesn't much interest me.

They had a diverse portfolio of hits far before Rayman Origin. While their DRM scheme is a current gen misfire and every big publisher spams series, going back to at least PS2 they've been publishing and developing successful titles across multiple budget tiers and genres. They're projects are more ambitious than EA and Activision, they're AAA products are slicker and more conceptually cutting edge, and they seem to have a better reputation among the masses, for what that's worth. They know how to play the game while not being completely creatively bankrupt. They're like the game company equivalent of David Fincher, but dumber.

Cool art style. I wonder if the huge success of Dragon's Crown is going to have a big impact on companies returning to more 2D/handdrawn aesthetics.
