So apparently Spelunky had its release on XBLA and apparently but not surprisingly it's great, the first and so far the only "hardcore" game available on consoles. Gameplay looked pretty decent (as in, they didn't change much, thank god), but I was wondering if any sub-human 360 owner on the Dex bought it?

I'd like to add:

Liero (1998, updated 2009)
http://www.liero.be/

Most of you know about this, a real-time worms-alike which can quickly escalate into total chaos.

Walaber's Trampoline (2011)
http://walaber.com/wordpress/?p=64

A trampoline game with an extended progress mode/tutorial and a Tony Hawk-like big tricks = more points structure. Good physics and quite challenging.

Star Wars: The Battle of Yavin (2004), Star Wars: The Battle of Endor (2003)
http://www.bruneras.com/games.php

These are probably the best re-creations of Star Wars space combat post- Tie-Fighter/X-Wing Alliance. Graphics mods are available.

This is a pretty cool indie game. It is a fresh take on a couple of different genres blended together. It is called:

Tower of Elements - http://toe.frogdice.com

The official info:

Tower of Elements is an innovative match 3, tower defense, role playing game. Play an elementalist who commands a magical tower against a relentless horde of monsters trying to breach your kingdom’s walls.

Make strategic matches to launch powerful, elemental bolts at the Void Army. Gain experience to learn mighty spells and gather gold to buy epic gear and deadly siege weapons.

Collect scrolls with information about your foes to compile a bestiary that will aid your kingdom in preparing its defense.

  • Fast paced match 3 with strategic tower defense.
  • Collectible monster cards.
  • 24 spells & 11 pieces of gear.
  • High level spells and gear are impressively epic.
  • 90 levels.
  • 10 chapter story in the world of Primordiax.

They have a free 10 level + 1 boss level demo on their web site.

For anyone who digs the game, here's a 50% off code I saw elsewhere: CFNV001H9

Well, I think no one mentioned FTL (http://www.ftlgame.com/), a extremly well balanced space roguelike and Grimrock (http://www.grimrock.net/), a great reboot of the dungeon-crawler genre.
Upcoming, already mentioned but great enough to be re-mentioned: Age of Decadence (http://www.irontowerstudio.com/)

And about the requested freeware:
(PS: and I also liked SpaceChem & Dwarf Fortress very much, +1 to each)

Starseed Pilgrim is an incredibly hard real-time puzzle adventure game. It has sucked up a ton of my time recently.

The Swapper kicks a lot of ass. Great hard sci-fi setting and very tough puzzles based on simple rules. The story is veyr well thought out also.
