  1. 4X What is the most innovative/boundary pushing 4x game or genre mashup in the last decade?

Difficult question. Innovative 4X seems to be an oxymoron. We mostly get reskinned Civ clones now. Not aware of anything as genuinely innovative as, say, Colonization or Imperialism, even MOO, recently. When a clunky old brown clone like Old World gets called "refreshing", you know 4X is in a...
  2. Your favorite strategy games.

The ones with most 100s of hours spent: Civ 4 HOMM3 EU2 AI Wars UFO Enemy Unknown Panzer Corps 1 & 2
  3. Decline How to promote an AAA RPG in 2024

That's not just the AAA devs. These days they are all doing it. There's one right there from an indie dev on the front page here today. "Retro inspired <insert genre here> that recreates the classics of days gone by". "Pixel art like it's 1985 again". (though what looked fine on a CRT screen...
  4. Starfield - Epic Shit Takes from Bethestards

One of the common responses by fans to any criticism is that it isn't whatever you thought it would be. It isn't an RPG. It isn't an exploration game. It isn't a shooter. It isn't about the story. It isn't a space simulator. It isn't even a finished game - it's meant to be a base for mods...
  5. Starfield - Epic Shit Takes from Bethestards

Things to do while playing Starefield. Keep telling yourself: "I'm having a blast...I'm having a blast...I'm having a blast".
  6. Starfield - Epic Shit Takes from Bethestards

That pretty much covers the "thought" Bethesda have given to the space/sci-fi setting 300 years in the future. They put the word "space" in front of everything and that will do. Space pirates, space cowboys, space cities, space lasers. space miners, space bars, space shops, space ports, space...
  7. Starfield - Epic Shit Takes from Bethestards

That's it, though. What else is there? Three things isn't "tons". And we've seen every one of those hundreds of times in other games. Most of them done better than Starfield. They are all highly repetitive and shallow, because the planets are repetitive and shallow. I don't see much chance for...
  8. Starfield - Epic Shit Takes from Bethestards

A couple more hours, a few more "It's so bad it's good" laugh out loud moments. Does it not bother anyone else that this world is 300 years in the future, yet everything looks just much the same of the world of today? That 300 years ago, we didn't have computers, cars, planes, offices, ipads...
  9. Starfield - Epic Shit Takes from Bethestards

You got it! It's 2023 America. In space. Not 300 years in the future. The opening scene in the mine. It looks exactly like a mine of today - except everybody's wearing space suits. And women are in charge. Repeat for every scene in the game. The sci-fi elements are non-existant. Any...
  10. Starfield - Epic Shit Takes from Bethestards

First impressions: Hey, isn't that the rock formation that was repeated 5000 times in Oblivion? Why is this mine, in 2300, using antique fire extinguishers from 300 years ago? Why does this mine and equipment in it, look just like a mine in 2023, only everyone is wearing spacesuits? That...
  11. Starfield Pre-Release Thread [GAME RELEASED, GO TO NEW THREAD]

Yes. But what else is there if you don't want to be a space cowboy? Everything I've seen looks like a Wild West shooter, only with a space reskin. Outlaws everywhere. Saloon shoot outs. Docs. Sheriffs. Fair enough as one way of playing the game. Not seeing much else. And trading doesn't count...
  12. Starfield Pre-Release Thread [GAME RELEASED, GO TO NEW THREAD]

300 years in the future and clothes and weapons have changed less than in the last 20 years. Is that explained? Did humanity put all it's effort into space travel, there was nobody left to do anything else? Also, our moral value system will remain firmly locked in the year 2023. Forever.
  13. Starfield Pre-Release Thread [GAME RELEASED, GO TO NEW THREAD]

You've summed up exactly what it looks like in the Let's Plays. Laser tag in a park. Once you realise that, find it hard to see how the game can hold your interest. There's plenty other games do the same, but better.
  14. Starfield Pre-Release Thread [GAME RELEASED, GO TO NEW THREAD]

Yeah, that's the impression I get - there must be 10000 hours of shootouts with Space Pirates on YT already! I have a free key unlocked on PC release day and still not sure whether to use it or give it away. I don't despise FO4 or FO3, but don't like them all that much either. 30 - 40 hours...
  15. Innovative Games that had disastrous long-term impact on the industry

Civilization 5 and Crusader Kings 2. For showing that if you dumb them down enough, you can sell nerdy strategy games to the masses. Unfortunately, I liked the misery of nerdy strategy games and preferred them inaccesable to the flashy shiny 3D image obsessed riff raff. Bring back the Stack Of Doom!
