Old-school rpgs for mobile phones?

Hello.

As you grow older, you miss the time to play good rpg games. Also, the ratio of good games vs mass produced crap is poor. But the itch to play something good remains.

When balancing work, family, kids, the only time you have to enjoy a blessed break from the soul-sucking hamster wheel might be 15 minutes here and there. Sneaking away to the restroom at work. Hiding in your cubicle. On a crowded train. Trying to stay awake in the back at a parents-teacher meeting. And all you have is your cellphone.

So: any recommended classic rpgs, good remakes or even good modern rpgs that play well on a standard phone?

Mobile gaming is for third worlders with no money who play pubg or that counterstrike clone. Either make the time (it's possible if you like the thing enough, RPGs probably aren't worth it) and stop being a slave to your "wife" or accept that gaming isn't a part of your life anymore. Or stop being a wagie where 90% of your job is "looking busy".

If I'm going to be really nice, I'll tell you Caves of Lore (2023) is an actual good RPG that was released on mobile, go for that.

The Quest and Exiled Kingdoms are both fantastic. I have played through The Quest a couple of times. If you do decide to play The Quest and end up liking it, only get the DLC called Island of Ice and Fire. The other addons are total shit and are not made by the actual devs. I fairly recently beat Exiled Kingdoms before playing their next game titled Archaelund. It was a pretty fun little adventure type RPG. I didn't play either on the phone, but they were both great on PC. Apparently, Battle for Wesnoth is on phones too. That's a great game too that fits the description of how you are playing phone games.

tldr

The Quest - As stated above and very much worth playing
Exiled Kingdoms - Enjoyable adventure rpg
Battle for Wesnoth - Anyone reading that hasnt played this, it's free on Steam. Seems like it would make a great phone game.
Caves of Lore - It deserved to win goty on Codex.

Old school RPGs for phones you say?
The Elder Scrolls: Stormhold
The Elder Scrolls: Dawnstar

Shadowkey is supposed to be pretty good and N-Gage technically is a phone

What about dungeon crawlers like Hero Quest? A lot of old RPG board games have mobile ports now. Fighting fantasy books are on mobile too. Lots of options if you dig into 80's board game titles.

Thanks a lot for the great suggestion of Caves of Lore. This game is a gem.

Bought the game and as a party-based rpg it plays better on an android phone than any other. Fantastic work from the developer.

As a weird curiosity if you like Old JRPGs: Square-Enix appears to be the last corporation that is still trying to put out android versions of $50 no micro transactions games day and date with steam

One at a time, I will convert the Codex to this gem...it's only a matter of time

Always can install an emulator and play console ports of old CRPGs or dungeon crawlers (Wizardry series, Might and Magic series, Eye of Beholder, all can be played on a console emulator). Or, better yet, go full weeb and play some classic JRPGs on NES/SNES/PS1 emulators (Dragon Quest series, Final Fantasy series, Mother series, Shin Megami Tensei and hundreds of its spinoffs).
