Shenmue III & King's Bounty 2 are on the cheap atm. The deep discount makes me think these games are terrible. Why isn't Shenmue I & II on gog; STEAM has them.

Current state of GOG:
-Ravenloft has a random crashing issue that was introduced in the latest patch
-Gog sells the game as is without any mention
-Some guy makes a random patch that is supposed to fix it but warns everybody to test it thoroughly
-Gog steals it and issues a patch
-Said patch randomly locks doors of some dungeons so you can't proceed
-Gog doesn't do anything for years and the game is still broken
Good job Gog.

And of course their shills at pcgaming wiki don't mention anything. Just grab exodos for anything dos if you want to play older games unmodified. Assholes are still selling master of orion 1/2 with unofficial patches applied.

this is GOG's basic modus operandi, it shouldn't surprise anyone.

For the longest time the Antara game, one of the sequels to Krondor, had game breaking bugs because the game came in 2 cds and they just dumped them into a folder. the issue is that both cds had files with the same name but different content and that caused lots of issues including said game breaking bug.

edit: i don't think there's been an update for that game btw

Which Ravenloft-game? Stone Prophet has had issues since 2017.

Just as a reminder:

2.1. Piracy: We do not mind discussions about piracy, however posts that are seeking or promoting pirated versions of games will be warned, the offending text may be edited out and it may result in a ban if you do it too often. As clarification: "I am seeking and / or promoting a pirated version of something" == BAD vs "Let us have a genuine discussion about piracy and the impacts it has on the game industry" == OKAY.

They do apply unofficial patches when original game is seriously broken - and they do contact the authors of said patches.

Of course there is a risk that author of unofficial patch is a drama queen - and / or not competent enough to actually fix the game - so in 95% of cases they don't bother and sell the original.

Maybe my views on sanctity of original, unmodified release is somewhat skewed by the fact that back in a day I've bought boxed copies of Daggerfall and Ultima IX. But I think that GOG selling Bloodlines or Gothic 3 with unofficial patches already applied makes sense. It would be nice if 'downgrade' feature would allow you to go back all the way to original physical release - for those people that care.

Or they could bundle the unofficial stuff as a installer. Best of both worlds. Install the original and then apply the unofficial stuff if you want to.

Hm? I distinctly remember them not always doing so. They also had a fan patch for Warlord's Battlecry 3 which messed up the game balance and they only removed it after a long time of buyers complaining.

Even ignoring unofficial patches:

When buying X-Wing - you get 1993 floppy release, 1994 CD-ROM release and 1998 Windows release.

Carmageddon 1 has 4 distinct executables - 320x200 and 640x480 with software renderer, 3Dfx one and Windows 95 DirectX one (unsupported).

In both cases there is no clearly superior version best for everyone - and some buyers will complain.

IMO version installed by default should run on most PCs - and should have as few as possibile game-breaking bugs. Other versions should be made accessible for 5% of 'sophisticated customers' - because it's a good PR and does not cost GOG all that much to provide them.
