If Winwood is Level20 the he will be able to recruit Level19-21 (same level approx) NPCs?
It seems so I am Level3 now and has recruited a Level3 Warlock.

Have you used save states? Now I configured the quick save state for one key press.
Configured + - = and cursor keys as well, but when I restart the emulator, I have to select them again. But these are minor problems.
CPU speed increase then decrease sometimes has no effect.
Honestly this emulator is working very strange.
Default annoyingly slow. I press the forward button, game displaying "You step forward" - waiting - show new place graphics - waiting.

Yeah, they scale up to your level

These are my settings (f12 to bring up)

The FPU makes a more balanced speed increase than powering up the CPU, but I have to throttle the CPU back to compensate. If I just bump the CPU it runs too fast. You can save these settings to a new config file but you have to edit the .exe to call the new config. I'd suggest making backups before you mess with it too much. The config files are in the winuae\data folder (the .exe files just call winuae with the appropriate config file auto-loaded).

Save states are in the miscellaneous tab. There's a hotkey but it doesn't work for me.

I have been playing this for about two months. Some interesting experiences. Winwood's strength went down to 3 and I couldn't think why. I stayed at an Inn and is stats went back to normal.
In the dungeons under the Lich's Inn I couldn't move a lever switch to make a teleport work. I had to find a magician in the dungeon to temporarily increase Winwood's strength, then it worked.
In Valvice two of my characters started saying that they were disappointed and didn't want to sleep in the mud anymore. We slept in the Inn a few times but they just left anyway while in the Grottos between fights. Very sensitive adventurers.

I have teleported to the final chambers in the Grottos level 7. When I try to go along the last corridor I get pushed back. As I understand it there is a protection sphere there that is turned off only when you have defeated all enemies. I have defeated all enemies in that final teleported area. Does that mean that I have to defeat all enemies on level 7? Or does it mean all enemies in the entire grottos? They respawn to some extent so that sounds like it could be a problem.

Is this game the Ultimate in roleplaying?
Winwood went to the Black Pub. He did not come back. He is rather drinking than adventuring.

Fate is the one of the greatest rpgs ever. Unfortunate that it is available on the crappy Amiga only. (Could be, only Winuae is crap.)

It is also available on Atari ST where it runs fast and reliably.
I have finally reached Mandrag on level 7 of the Grottos. You have to kill all Myrmions and Mercenaries in the Grottos to gain access. There are a lot of them and you know you have finished when they no longer spawn. I have been playing for 3 months, which is usually long enough for most big games. It looks like it is at least twice as long as my previous favourites Amberstar and Disciples of Steel.

I have tried the Steem emulator, but it is the same unresponsive UI. For example I want to turn left - press key - nothing happens - press key again - turn left.
Aha - I have to press long the key. (edited)

I have no experience of Steem, I only play games on an original Atari ST. With the movement keys you have to press the key gently and hold for about a second for it to register. I assume it was intentionally programmed like that.

I found tweaking WinUAE's CPU settings every time I load it up got me reliably smooth gameplay

After around 9 months I have finished the game playing on Atari ST. It turns out that is is about three times longer than other long RPGs, such as Amberstar. It is very long, but still I am a bit sad that it is all over. Towards the end I could defeat most opponents using Pray with my Priest. That is good because in the last two dungeons you get spammed by opponents on nearly every square. A great game.

How do you wait for 2 hours? It is 6 o'clock in the morning, pub will open at 8h. I can only rest for 6 hours.

Do you need to talking to NPCs to advance the story?
I would try again Fate, last time I had got tired from the talking mechanism. Adulate/bribe/enchant/etc every random NPC to get Xp/attributes inc. and tips. Very autist gameplay. +terrible UI.
So I would hire some NPCs in the beginning and stop talking.
