Of course I'm aware of this (I read all his non-controversial works in confirmation and high-school, and read all his controversial works in college). Luther was a brilliant, complicated, man. He was also a medieval German with the cultural and political views of his times. Lutherans revere his theology, but we have never, ever, claimed he's a saint. Heck, Luther himself never claimed to be a saint.

He was very open about his imperfections. As with any great historical figure, you have to cherish what's good about them, while acknowledging, contextualizing, and ultimately rejecting, what's bad about them.
