"Very linear" is a euphemism, each map is a long corridor in disguise. There are side quests that are supposed to give you a small amount of freedom, but the ones I found are either "fight a new encounter in an already explored area" or "go talk to these three people". There's a story and there are puzzles, but they are just an excuse to keep the game going.

That said, the combat system is an almost flawless adaptation of D&D 5E and it feels great. I can't stress enough how fun and addicting the combat is in this game. There are encounters that aren't particularly interesting, but each map has at least two or three good set pieces.

Fuck NJClaw, listen to me. If you only care about combat and builds then buy it for sure. If you're only playing for story, role playing options, etc. then skip it. It is linear. Think more Icewind Dale than bg. Whatever you do, just don't buy bg3

If you stick to how God wants us to assign abilities (standard point buy, standard array, or single roll) the game can also be challenging enough that you will have to make every resource count. I played the first chapter at least 10 times and there's a boss that keeps kicking my ass every single time.

I used standard array - even though I believe point buy to be better - since it seemed like it was the way the developers wanted you to go. Glad you aren't a heathen NJClaw.

The game tries to create interesting characters with a system based on tags that you can assign to them and that are supposed to shape their personalities, but it doesn't seem incisive enough. But if you can get in the mood for a mindless dungeon crawl that doesn't take itself too seriously, even the story is acceptable.

Definitely give it a try: if it's in your chords, you will love it; if you don't enjoy the combat after the first "dungeon", refund it as soon as possible. I know I'm enjoying it a lot, I can't stop playing it.
