eToychest has decided to pick 10 Top RPGs and post some boring bullshit about the author being an RPG fan. The good thing is that neither the BG nor the NWN series made the list, the bad thing is that I don't see any Ultima game there either. So, without further ado:

10. Wasteland
9. Quest for Glory 2: Trial by Fire
8. The Bard's Tale
7. Pool of Radiance
6. Fallout
5. Chrono Trigger
4. Deus Ex
3. Final Fantasy III
2. Planescape Torment
1. Wizardry VII: Crusaders Of The Dark Savant
I have a feeling that some of you might disagree.

How Wasteland, Quest for Glory 2, Chrono Trigger and FF 3 got on the list is beyond me

I would have put BG on that list

I'd do some swapping around and take out CT, FF3 and Dues Ex and replace them with the original Baldur's Gate, System Shock 2 and Ultima VII.

I always found SS2 to be far superior to Dues Ex. I think BG should be on the list, although somewhere around 10-8. Fallout is, of course number one. :D

You don't know how Wasteland got on that list?? I can see the others you listed not being on the list, but not including Wasteland as one of the greatest RPGs of all time doesn't seem right to me.

my list:
10. Buck Roger's Countdown to doomsday(sorry I really liked it)
9. Ultima IV
8. Bard's Tale
7. Might and Magic 4-5 (World of Xeen)
6. Darklands
5. Baldur's Gate
4. System Shock 2
3. Planescape Torment
2. Fallout
1. Wasteland

I don't know if Wasteland should be #1. I think that Ultima IV was probably one of the most revolutionary RPGs of all time and Ultima VII should be on the list as well. I think the top five should include those two Ultima games, Wasteland, Fallout and Bard's Tale, in no particular order.

Interesting list. Genre arguments aside, I've played most of those games, and they're all great. Yes, even the console games, though the inclusion of console games makes it awfully difficult to have a coherent Top 10. Keep 'em separate, kiddoes.

I say seperate them, cause it's like comparing an apple to a peach or something (best analogy I could think up). PC RPGs in graphics, sound, etc are USUALLy superior to console RPGs, as well as in linearity, though this trend is changing very quickly.

I think that Wizardry VII being number one is a bit far-fetched. On what criteria would you rate these games? How much fun they were? How they impacted the genre? How well they sold? A combination of all three? I'm sure there are many other things you could judge these games on. Top ten lists always get to me, because it is so hard to determine what should be in there and what should not.

How would you base your game ratings?

while i understand that bard's tale is a favorite, probably everybody that's ever been interested in the crpg genre has either played it, or wished they could play it. however, that game is about as far removed from the phrase "rpg" as indiana jones adventure games are. face it, there was no selectable dialog other than "yes" or "no" and none of your actions had any affect on the world whatsoever. to include that and leave out any of the ultimas is a travesty.

Gah.
I'm reminded why top ten lists are stupid.
Bah. Away with this travesty.

Aww, come on, nobody here liked Arcanum? I would stick it somewhere around 8.

8??? The only RPG better than Arcanum is Torment. Other opinions are wrong.

Console RPGs are CRAP! Even if you allow them to be considered for the list, none would make it. Not by a long shot. I have never played PS:T. Is it still available? Everyone keeps talking about it like it is the second coming and I need to find some great games from the recent past that I can pick up for cheap.

Any suggestions?

I have both the Fallout games, Toee, NWN (not a good choice), and Morrowind(bad investment), and BG1. What am I missing that I could pick up cheap?

Of course! Arcanum! How could I forget!

Arcanum defenatly deserves to be on the top ten.

As for PS:T, it defenatly deserves to be on that list as well. It's a lot like a good book.

I have Arcanum. That game was sweet! I think I will reinstall it after my honeymoon. Until then, I don't think that I will have time to play games.

PS: T is not available in retail but you can probably pick it up used somewhere or on EBay...

if you want a loooooong involved time killer that's pretty fun though mostly hack-n-slash lootfest, i'd say BG2.

I might try BG2 and the expansion. It does have an expansion, doesn't it? I bet I can get it cheap. I kind of liked the first one, but the combat was pretty piss poor. That's about it, huh? WTF happened to this genre?

If you want roleplaying, stay clear of the BG2 expansion. It's as much of a linear hack and slash as Icewind Dale.

Granted, BG2 doesn't have much RPing to start with, but the expansion has even less. It's pretty much all combat.
