I've been assured this is not the same interview that was already posted, it's a different interview about Hellgate London which happens to be done with a different yet also German site. Anyway, clippity clip:

HellgateLondon.de/gamona: Will there be something like crafting in Hellgate: London? We’ve heard you may come up with a Horadric-Cube system, but besides that, will there be some kind of professions, adding to the depth of the gameplay? A simple example would be a first-aid ability you are able to learn from a trainer.

Bill Roper: Since our items are randomly generated, having traditional MMORPG-style crafting just doesn’t make sense. However, there are a lot of other ideas we’re playing with that might be pretty interesting to players who want other game elements to fiddle with. As we try these out and decide which ones work well, we’ll talk definitely talk about them. But for now, it would all just be speculation as to what might actually make it into the game.

Why doesn't it make sense? It made sense with Prince of Qin, Bill! Are you saying you're not as smart as Communists?

Thanks, Exitium of Hellgate Guru!

It would make perfect sense. Having a "Scavenger" type skill to get stuff from refuse, like pieces of metal and chain to make new armor, weapons, etc.

Get off your lazy ass and do something new besides FIRST PERSON!

It makes no sense since it allows players to be in control over their gear instead of having to rely on luck.

Random loot usually sucks (point in case, KotOR 2 even with a crafting system suffered from it) because instead of making a character build and having the right gear for it we end up having to make character build around on what the game random gives to the player.

You can mix crafting and random loot items system. There is stuff like enhancing your randomly found items with new materials and having 75% chance of braking it while doing so. So it becomes randomly enhanced or broken mixed with taking a chance of ruining a decent item to get an even better one.

One reason I had trouble with the Diablo games. Diablo 1 was okay, but there was so much shit in the second, the chances of getting something good was pretty low. I didn't powergame with +1hundredmillion tofindmagic%, maybe that was my problem. Even then, why find good equipment if you're wearing magic find?
