Gearhead has hit version 1.001(and the graphics pack for that version has been updated as well). Here's a big list of changes:

Added experimental USETACTICSMODE config option (arenaplay.pp)

Rescued PCs more likely to suffer perminant injuries (arenaplay.pp)

Shopkeepers will once more keep same inventory for 24 hours (fpc
compiler)

Fixed bug in selling stolen items code (services.pp)

No more hills in Hogye (series/)

Monster XP calculation may be based on difficulcy rating instead of just the cost of their body (ability.pp)

XP calculations have always been a fun part of CRPGs. Personally, I've always liked the generic method of just giving a base amount of experience and have the experience between levels ramp up. That's just me, though.

Thanks, pyrrho12!

It's nice to see he's still working on improving the 2D one. GearHead 2, while a logical next step, just doesn't appeal to me. Maybe it will down the line.

What annoys me is the D&D/Geneforge/Diablo system, which combines increasing XP requirements with decreasing XP rewards. Even enemies significantly weaker than you can still hit hard enough en masse to kick your ass. Unless you're so godlike in comparison that the odds of taking even a single point of damage are near 1:10,000, a horde of these schmucks can still theoretically kill you. Reaper Turrets in Geneforge were especially bad about this; they were low enough level that you didn't get much XP from them, but they were scattered so liberally that 3-4 could still wax a Shaper without too much effort.
