On the other hand, reading a scorched fragment of some corpse's journal is, like, so much better than actually figuring out the puzzle yourself! I mean, totally! Of course the previous owner didn't make it out alive--he couldn't read his own handwriting!

Personally, I think BioWare should use the "corpse memoir" approach for even their official strategy guides. Keep the foolishness of little minds consistent, even if hobgoblins are going to wait for XP2.

I have to agree that this is one of the funniest examples of a designer lacking the ability to obviously think things through to totality. It's also right up there with the first and second chapter of NeverWinter Nights where they send some level 3 nobody to recover the missing monster bits needed for the cure and search for the evil cult when they have a perfectly good ultra high level paladin just sitting around doing nothing.

I often find it amusing when people call those games "immersive" when they have such silly things that should make anyone with a lick of sense say, "Uh? What? That's just ludicrious."
