IGN have a preview of Hellgate: London up that unveils the second class in the game, the "cabalist".
These guys are the pushers of fringe science. Mystical sciences that seem far out and away from our capabilities like particle acceleration and cold fusion make this serious bunch all warm and squishy. This propensity for pushing the edge of technology and what's available pushes them towards finding ways of controlling demons and even becoming like them in order to defeat them. With the appearance of the demons and their control of powerful forces, the cabalists saw an opportunity to blend their own high technology with the more arcane forces of the demons.
...

Mystical sciences? Knuckleheads, the point of science is that it isn't mystical, it's goddamn science.

Well there is always the idea that any science far enough detatched from current understanding appears mystical. These cabalists could be equated to alchemists, in that they are researching in a scientific field that they don't truly understand and so a certain amount of mystic language is used to fill the gap. That tended to be the scientific method from the times before Newton and would seem to be a fitting methodology for a world that had been invaded by 'demons'.

'Sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.' Think of the modern invention the microwave. You can't explain it, so that's fuckin magic.

But cyber-demons ala 'Doom', eh? Shucks, that's damn innovative.

Behind you.
I'd say science has the same hang ups today that it did when the catholic church was funding it, especially university research.

Listen, it's hard to find things to complain about in games sometimes, alright?

Anyways, it's basically just a spellcaster class, so thus far HGL has demons, a big armored melee dude, and a frail spellcaster type. Where's the innovation?

Diablo 2 lover as I was this doesn't seem the least bit interesting. Taking a concept and smacking it into a first person view does not make it a great game, and that is what Blizz... sorry, Flagship Studios appear to be doing. Diablo in a future setting with first person view.
