FiringSquad has a preview of Hellgate London. There's not really too much to say about it, so here's a clip:

While there is lots of shooting and action in this game, Hellgate London is a true RPG. Players gain experience, collect items and take on both the main quest and side quests. Speaking of which, Roper told us that there will be quickie mini-quests that will be generated to get extra loot or temporary boosts in abilities. For example one mini-quest may instruct you to kill three specific monsters. Accomplish that and some extra loot may be dropped for you.

Kill three specific monsters for extra loot is a true RPG mini-quest? I'm willing to accept the whole thing as a modern, commercial rogue-like with a great deal of depth, but I'm hoping for a little bit more than killing three specific monsters for mini-quest generation.

There have been scripted quests that involved less than killing three specific monsters. Their quest generator isn't doing so bad. Perhaps in 2010, when the technology is fully developed, we can kill four specific monsters.

Yeah, but fallout had STYLE. This prolly wont, but who knows. Anywho, the game maystill be good. These small quest enemies better be boss like, tho, and surrounded by minions, badass style, otherwise it'll get boring as hell.

that may surprise some people here, but I think it is the most bright argument we ever have in this forum.

some people spend their day to debate that this game is good or is a RPG because of a :
- subjective definition of what a good game is
- this game A has this feature, this game B doesn't so A>B

at the end, we could argue years and years but I think that what make the difference is maybe "STYLE" as Major Blackhart said.

isnt that what you do in any rpg....i mean kill the big boss kill the bad people....fallout was that way too.....

No, the "mini-quests" in FO were not simply kill this or that; look at the first mission from Shady Sands--rescue Tandy from the raiders--you could fight the boss one on one, you could barter for her, you could talk them into handing her over, you could stealth prison break, or you could just shoot up the whole camp. So it's not just go and kill 3 bad guys.
And in the odd the chance that you were comparing main quests, which would be suspect since we're discussing side quests then I'd still apply the same argument because there are multiple ways of completing the main story arch.

That video makes it look like a straight up action game to me. I wonder if there are any meaningful choices at all.

Don't be a fucktard. The game's a straight-up action RPG with an extreme emphasis on action. The only choice you'll need to make is what skills to upgrade and what ph4t l3wt to equip. Action RPGs are necessarily bad, but this isn't doing anything new or interesting beyond the first-person perspective. I mean christ, the guns are "spell-delivery systems." Instead trying to do an ARPG that tries to break beyond the Blizzard mold, they just slap a new aesthetic on it and call it a day.

Well since you know you aren't ever going to see Fallout/Torment/arcanum or system shock/deus ex/thief type games anymore, Diablo2 clones are the next best thing.

I have a little bit of hope that Mass Effect will bring back a bit of Deus Ex love. Bioware seems to be pimping the 'gray' in the morality of this one. Of course they're also working hard on the extra for-pay content, so maybe you'll have to pay extra for the type of character you want.
