Ultimate ADOM - Caverns of Chaos, the upcoming dungeon crawling sequel to the classic roguelike by Thomas Biskup, entered alpha earlier this year and has received a steady stream of video updates over the past few months. The game was originally going to be released sometime this year but was quietly delayed to early 2021 in September. Yesterday it was announced that Ultimate ADOM has been picked up by German indie publisher Assemble Entertainment and will be out on Steam Early Access on February 11th. Here's the game's new announcement trailer along with the accompanying press release:

Wiesbaden, Germany 8th December, 2020 - Publisher Assemble Entertainment and developer Team ADOM announced today rogue-like dungeon crawler Ultimate ADOM - Caverns of Chaos, headed to Steam Early Access on 11th February, 2021 for Windows PC, Mac, and Linux. Ultimate ADOM is a traditionally-inspired reimaging of the beloved genre and features endless procedurally generated dungeons, monsters, and crafting options, allowing for ultimate replayability.

Evil has been vanquished. Peace has returned to Ancardia, and the peasants dare to dream once more of prosperity. Seven very different factions vie for control over the cataclysmic aftermath left behind by Andor Drakon’s defeat. And somewhere, deep down in an inhospitable cave, chaos is stirring again. Pick up your blade, prepare your spells, check your daggers and ready your bow, for you are about to enter the ominous Caverns of Chaos. Choose your allegiance carefully, for you are nothing more than an expendable asset to the masters you choose.

Fight for a mercenary's glory and a hefty coin purse, for the justice of a community in decline, for the light of purity, or even for chaos itself. Every choice you make will determine how you approach the ever-changing Caverns of Chaos laid out before you.

“To be the person who originated a game with an active and dedicated community since 1994 makes me unbelievably proud," said Thomas Biskup, Creator of ADOM. "After 25 years we will continue the story of ADOM and bring that experience into the modern realm. Ultimate ADOM: Caverns of Chaos offers plenty of depth for seasoned vets of the genre but with all the tweaks, options, and quality of life adjustments that ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for the contemporary player.”

Key Features of Ultimate ADOM Include:

  • Depth for Days — Choose from a huge selection of classes, genders, races, and allegiances to mix and match the perfect build for your playstyle
  • A Proper Roguelike — Procedurally generated levels, monsters, and items ensure no playthrough is the same
  • More Spells Than a Hogwarts Textbook — With multiple specialized schools of magic and more than 100 spells to choose from, dungeon-diving wizards have plenty at their disposal to get them through the darkness
  • That’s a Nice Arm You’ve Got There... — Take the severed limbs of your enemies and graft them to your own body, after all, more hands = more weapons to hold
  • A Jack of All Trades — With more than 80 skill trees, aspiring dungeon delvers have plenty of choices when it comes to crafting the ultimate warrior, and then there are the dozens of secret skills waiting to be discovered!
  • Go Modern or Keep it Classic — Modern graphics or traditional ASCII, the choice is yours! Players can also toggle between 3D mode and top-down view.

The early access version of Ultimate ADOM will launch on Windows PC, Mac, and Linux via Steam on 11th February, 2021. Definitely better than the teaser trailer from April. Hopefully the game comes out on GOG as well.

:what:

What the fuck? You take ADOM which has the kind of cool distinction (Not unique, but it executes it well) of being an open world roguelike where you can tackle dungeons/quests in different orders and have some slight impact on the game world over the course of a run based on what you're doing, and then you make the sequel a regular dungeon crawl? Dungeon crawls are fine for roguelikes, but it feels wrong for "ADOM2" to be stuck in a dungeon. Hopefully that's just early access limiting people to an infinite dungeon rather than the game being a dungeon.

3D map's pretty pointless too. ADOM's paid version was a decent use of tiles and sprites for a roguelike, the little animations in this look kinda bad (Though visible mutations with extra arms is nice) and I have a hard time imagining rotating the camera's worth a damn. On top of that, skill trees and abilities and shit sounds like a move to ToME-like character progression which once again can be fine but is distinctly not like ADOM. 'spose there could be an argument that changing shit is good since that prevents it from just being more of the same, but that trailer doesn't give the sense that the game will have the same feeling as playing ADOM now. The appeal of ADOM (To me at least) is brainless mashy combat with enough metagame knowledge you can get an edge but not quite as necessary as something like Nethack and the pleasing feeling of plotting out where you're going to take your character based on your equipment/experience/etc. The Steam page mentions "Dungeons", but given how the trailer looks I get the sense they're sub-dungeons rather than fucking off to the world map and going to new locations. Bit of a bummer but then again, it's a fucking trailer for a roguelike so it's hard to get too much solid information out of it for how things will actually play.

6 genders? Good grief.

However, gender isn't about someone's anatomy, it is about who they know them self to be. There are many different gender identities, including male, female, transgender, gender neutral, non-binary, agender, pangender, genderqueer, two-spirit, third gender, and all, none or a combination of these.
Why the fuck does this new terminology need to be in a random rouge-like dungeon crawler. Are fucking monsters going to try to sexually assault you or get a date? Fucking stupid.

There are two forms of reproduction: asexual and sexual. In asexual reproduction, an organism can reproduce without the involvement of another organism. Asexual reproduction is not limited to single-celled organisms. The cloning of an organism is a form of asexual reproduction.

Then i read japanese and fucks working on same sex reproduction (female sperm, male eggs)

Fucking retardo to the max.

can you play as a fern? An amoeba, a bacteria, a virus, an atom? A piece of candy?

The game has a demo. Genders all have slight effects. I took "tentacled" :mhd:
Then the game crashed when I tried to graft additional limbs to my body...
Since I like TOME and dislike ADOM this is more up my lane. But otherwise I agree with MhC.

What's funny is in a few games i thought of switching the tiles around to ASCII but never would I pay for it. Then again, I've swapped out old game tiles in games that had easy access to their graphics (FRUA mainly, EUO). It gets stale fast and doesn't even warrant a full playthrough.
