<b>Bill Black</b> of <a href="http://www.bigfatkittyllc.com/">Big Fat Kitty</a> and voice director for <a href="http://nwn.bioware.com">Neverwinter Nights</a> has an <a href="http://www.homelanfed.com/index.php?id=14017">interview</a> over at one of my favorite-est sites, <a href="http://www.homelanfed.com">HomeLAN Fed</a>. Here's the usual clippet from the thing followed by the usual <b>*ZING*</b> at <A href="http://www.bioware.com">BioWare</a>:
<br>
<br>
<blockquote><b>HomeLAN</b> - How did you work with both BioWare and the voice actors in the game to get the type of work they needed to do for Neverwinter Nights?
<br>
<br>
<b>Bill Black</b> - Bioware was wonderful when it came to conveying their vision. We had a great script to start with. This thing was well thought out and well written. That made all the difference. We had the most detailed character examples I can ever remember. Armed with this great script, super examples of what they wanted, an open phone line to them whenever we needed it, we were able to take of everything. I have to praise Doug Stone my director for keeping it moving. I work with him on most all character voice over for games.</blockquote>

<a href="http://www.bioware.com">BioWare</a>'s <i>vision</i> for <a href="http://nwn.bioware.com">Neverwinter Nights</a> can best be summed up in two words: <i>Blank stare</i>.

And the average voice acting quality in NWN can be summed up in one word: Aribeth

Yes, NWNs voice acting was pretty terrible. Any time Aribeth opened her mouth I had to turn off the speakers. Funny, though, I'm playing through IWD again and it has great voices. All of BIS' games do. And Bio's games under Interplay weren't too bad... BG2's villian-voice was cliched, but good, and though the romance dialogues were cheesy, they were well read. BG1's voices were usually goofy or funny, but not grating. ("I got some cheap beer for ya!") I guess Interplay's great underappreciated gift is the ability to contract good voice talent. That being said, I'm not sure anyone has gotten the "heroic warrior woman" voice right yet.

You can't go wrong with David Warner, voice of Morpheus in Fo1, the Evil Genius in Time Bandits, and so much more.
