Hellgate Guru has an interview with Ivan Sulic about Hellgate: London. Like always, it covers a huge variety of topics, including NINJAS:

5. Is there any eastern classes will be show in HGL like Monk or Ninja?

Ivan Sulic: No. Hellgate: London is very much focused on London and general European mythos. If we go Eastern with an expansion pack or sequel, then we will certainly incorporate Far East classes to represent that.

I'm kind of amazed Exitium let that English error slip in that question. If anything, he's damned keen with the language. Anyway, why the hell would there be Eastern classes in a game about Templars, Hell, and such in London?

I'm surprised Ivan answered the question and didn't just ask what the fuck he was talking about, I guess thats why I've never gotten a job as a publicity whore :/

Exactly. Monks or Ninjas? What the fuck is this stupid fetish or obsession with monks and ninjas anyway? I must also say that I despise the whole monk class RPG genre spawned some decades ago. A totally unnecessary and irrational class even by the high fantasy standards in my opinion. They're just wankers.

As for ninjas.. gay. Funny that there's a large crowd at ESF who relate Dark Brotherhood to ninjas, using modes to replace the default DB assassins with pijama wearing man-sluts with eastern weaponry in both games. Not that the default outfits were nice in the games but still..

There is something to be said for replacing the standard High Fantasy cliche thats been beaten to death. Though not necessarily by introducing another cliche.

As for why Exit-boy thought it would be worth asking in regards to Hellgate... maybe he's just on crack. Then he doesn't have to make sense. It explains a lot of behavior over the years.

Since when is monk considered an eastern class? WTF is up with that? Fuck ninjas anyway. I'd rather see a pirate class in games.

Monks were a very important social caste in medieval Europe. In the age of the templars Europe was covered by a network of monasteries. They were the centers of knowledge and learning. Ok, at the end they only invented unimportant stuff like the fundations of genetics and black powder..
A proper European Monk class would have to be an ascetic scholar, but I am still waiting for an RPG where characters without any combat skill actually make sense.

We are talking the RPG monk classes here, not the historical monks. I don't think anyone with the historically correct title of a monk ever fucked around, slapping and kicking people, as in Kung-Fu (with Carradine).

but I am still waiting for an RPG where characters without any combat skill actually make sense.

It will happen at some point. Hopefuly before I die.

I don't mind the idea of monks, but they have to fit the setting. My big problem with monks in D&D is they're fairly out of place compared to the rest of the European style fantasy classes.

Personally, I wouldn't mind if the guys who made Prince of Qin made a more recent history CRPG where monks were a class. Since someone mentioned the Kung Fu TV series, everyone knows the best episodes were the ones set in China. The two parter where Master Po, the hermit barbarian, Caine, and Barbara Hersey went to stop the fuedal warlord from sieging another Shoalin monastery was one of the best two hours of TV from the 1970s.

Ninjas are completely gay, except this one. I've never understood the fascination with them. They just suck.

In fact, I think the worst episodes of Kung Fu were the ones with ninjas.

Here's something even gayer: A ninja with a dog! Shadow Dancer!

I bet they do "go Eastern," and the expansion after that will be Native American Shamans and such, because once you start to mess it up, why not do a really, really good job of it?

You two are the reason for headlines like this. I put down a deposit and scheduled my facial surgery for mid-May. No sense sharing now. If you've waited this long, you can wait that long. I've been thinking about starting a blog after the operation anyway. I'll put up some pix there, and you can gaze at me longingly as much as you like.

The answer to this is:

Azurewrath said:
21rpg.com is a Chinese fansite, and not everyone speaks great English. In such cases, they translate using those online programs, with these results. Or it's just that the person doing the translating messed up a bit. Give 'em a break, English sounds like gibberish to most Chinese people and it's very hard to learn, just like Chinese is to us. They have ideograms, we have alphabets for God's sake :D

Ivan himself:

Just to clear that up. I couldn't get ahold of Exitium himself for comment, though.
