They're not overdone. No one's made a good pirate game yet.

Yeah I think that's it. Tons of pirate games but most seem to be quickly forgotten.

The original Sid Meier's Pirates is a landmark title imo. I know Sid released his own remake, which is decent, but that was 20 years ago at this point. Is there really no worthy successor with good production values that emulates and possibly improves upon the formula?

Sea Dogs. Those games are not terrible.
They were over ambitious, therefore very janky, but they were also quite unique in the sense of freedom they gave.
Pirates are as close to murderhobo as it gets, and the theme favour open world, so it is no surprise that it is so used, but combining ship and party action is very hard to do well.

Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
I just saw the title and like everyone, I was hoping it was an Oblivion expansion. Wouldn't that be a Christmas present to top all presents?

Pirates are such an overdone concept.
Considering how the majority of RPGs ever released are generic high fantasy, any setting that isn't generic high fantasy cannot be overdone.

I can probably find 1000 high fantasy RPGs if I bothered to make a list, and it wouldn't even be hard.
When you can name me 1000 pirate RPGs, then they're overdone. Before that, they're not.

Good pirate RPG, perhaps not. Good pirate computer game, accomplished in 1987:
