The WarGamer has done up their E3 Preview of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on their E3 site. It covers everything in minor detail from the Dark-O-Meter to hyperspace travel. Oh, and this too:

The game itself is offering three archetypes for classes: Scoundrel, Scout, and Soldier. Exactly how these classes will develop is something that BioWare held fairly tightly, but they did indicate that the game system would be based off of the D20 system created by Wizards of the Coast. That means that the Feats and Abilities that were available in, say, Icewind Dale II will also make an appearance in Knights of the Old Republic.

Nothing like Great Cleave with dual purple lightsabers!

For folks worried about the advent of travel through hyperspace, we were reminded that travel by that mode has been around for some 20,000 years, so while players may not be able to zip around the galaxy in the Millennium Falcon, they will be able to do so at near equivalent speeds.

Now this isn't in anyway Bioware's fault, but this is one of the things that bothers me about the Star Wars so called "Expanded Universe", the stagnation of technology. To me, it's all but unthinkable that technology could just basically stand still for 20,000 years, especially since civilization hasn't regressed back into an equivalent of the Dark Ages, but rather is thriving for most of that time.

Players will enjoy something like 40 Force powers for their character, and the game offers a wide variety of weapon customization. We were given a demonstration of how a player could disassemble his lightsaber in his workshop and change both the color of the blade and the type of damage it inflicts prior to going on a mission. Some other neat features that will be included are a fast “return to hideout” feature which will allow players not in hostile territory to avoid long waits while the cross through friendly hyperspace.

*sigh*

The net result of this “alignment” is displayed on something that the developers informally call the “Dark-O-Meter.” This is essentially a display that shows how close to one Side or the other a player’s actions have brought him. The developers indicated that a player’s actions can change their position on the Dark-O-Meter throughout the game, and they stated that it is difficult but technically possible to start totally on one Side of the Force, progress completely to the other, and return to the original side before the end of the game.

Wow, it's nice to know that we can be a Force yo-yo!

I wander how that works. Something tells me that you do all the "evil" quests, then do all the "good" quests. Role-playing a hero on a quest for maximum experience points - gotta catch them all!
