CD Projekt, publisher of The Witcher (Wiedzmin), an action RPG based on the books of the best known Polish author, Andrzej Sapkowski, has posted 2 new screenshots from the game at their website:

Although the game's main focus will be combat, the plot and dialogues should also be interesting, as they've been written by Studio Sarmatia - makers of one of the best Polish PnP RPGs - "Dzikie Pola" ("Wild Fields").

Also, today on midnight Polish time (11 PM GMT), the Witcher's website will be opened. Stay tuned.

No, not really.
But here's more about the witchers:
The witchers are a group mutants, started by some human mage a long time ago. They were mutated to be stronger, more agile, have better sight, hearing etc. Their purpose was to defend humans against various monsters (the humans came to that world from another world 500 years ago), which were too dangerous for normal humans to deal with. They're not some altruistic paladins, of course - they do it for money.
Their visible mutation made them outcasts in the human society, though (they often have visible mutations, like totally white hair or skin, cat-like eyes etc.), especially after most of the monsters became extinct.
The mutation process starts when the to-be witchers are children, and most of the children don't survive it - only the strongest do. They either accept volunteers from poor families, homeless children, or take them by "the right of surprise" - sometimes they want "what you already have, but don't know it yet" as a prize for their job, and sometimes it's a child (sometimes it's something entirely different, though :)).
The name comes both from their mutaton, and from their slight magical abilities - they use weak spells called "signs", like Igni Sign - weak fire spell, or Aard Sign - weak telekinesis.
The witchers are totally neutral to human (or other humanoid) wars and confilcts, and generally don't kill sentient beings (vampires are an exception), and are almost as hated as the elves by the people (although they're sometimes necessary). In the time of the books (and the game) there are very few of them.
Geralt, the main protagonist from the book, was a little different than most witchers, and became more involved in some affairs that he shouldn't have, but in the game you'll play another witcher, who mostly does fight the monsters, so it's not inconsistant with the book world :).
My description is not as good as the one by the author himself, so if it sounds like crap, believe me that it's not. And if any of you speaks Polish, Russian, German, Czech, Spanish or French, you can read the books yourselves :).

According to Ryszard Chojnowski from CD Projekt, there will be one of the Sapkowski's short stories in the website in English ("Lesser Evil" - great one!), in PDF and HTML.

Edit: the story won't be there today yet, but somewhere in the middle of the next week :).

I'm looking forward to hearing more about this game/book. It'd be nice if they translated the books into English. Robert Jordan let me down.

If RJ let you down, George RR Martin will lift you up. Come on, you know you want to.
