<A href="http://www.homelanfed.com/">HomeLAN Fed</a> dishes up a fun filled <A href="http://www.homelanfed.com/index.php?id=14567">interview</a> with <b>Erik Bethke</b> of <a href="http://www.taldren.com">Taldren</a> about their 3rd person, sci-fi action CRPG, <A href="http://www.black-9.com/">Black-9</a>. Here's a bit on the character system:
<br>
<br>
<blockquote><b>HomeLAN</b> - It sound like RPG-like characters will be a big part of Black9. What can you tell us about the playable characters and their abilities?
<br>
<br>
<b>Erik Bethke</b> - The RPG system is based on four character attributes: Strength, Dexterity, Agility and Constitution. Dexterity is used for hacking and nanotech skill checks. Additionally, all of the nanotech effects check against a second attribute such as the area effect water nanotech Tsunami uses Constitution in addition to Dexterity. The RPG system to our action game acts like the whole car-building addiction of Gran Tourismo to the racing game. Strength affects melee attacks, Constitution health, and Agility running and jumping. However, all of our RPG elements act as a secondary, light effect on top of the action interface of the game.</blockquote>
<br>
<br>
In the future, hacking no longer requires <i>knowledge</i> and <i>thinking</i>, only <i>reflexes</i>!
<br>
<br>
Actually, there's a strange parallel with the above line about hacking in <A href="http://www.black-9.com/">Black-9</a> and playing modern day CRPGs as well.

You know, Matrix is the first thing I thought of when I read that H4X0R = D3XT3R1T33 thing in there. The second thing I thought of was Wizardry 8's lockpicking minigame, which I didn't like much.

It just seems to me that if you're going to have hacking in a game, it should be based on the character's intelligence and skill. Having it based on Dexterity just really seems goofy since it's a mental task.

Oh my goodness, I thought you were joking.... Well, this will go on my "not to buy list."

why not? It might be a *fun* action game. You could have fun with Deus Ex if you ignored the nagging in the back of your head telling you that was no RPG...

I'm willing to take a look at reviews and maybe buy it. If the action elements are cool, the skill customizability might give it the extra bit it needs to be replayable.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm one of the multi-genre fans around here. I don't mind a decent action game at all. however, there really is something about the quote that strikes me as irritating. Anyhow, it will have to be really great for it to supplant other games. I just don't have time to play them all.

no problems with action. but that just seemed bizzarre. were they apologizing for tacking on these 'RPG elements' onto a shooter, or saying they are badly implemented, or what does it have to do with the interface... just weird, that's all :lol:

from what I saw in past Black9 news, the devs seem quite straightforward. I think they even posted some messages here in the Codex. My read on that quote was literal: they're simply telling RPG fans like us to not go into the game expecting Fallout. They're saying that the game will be primarily action, adn will simply include RPG elements for diversity. I have no problem with that.

Well, what Erik says kind of flies in the face of what GameSpot reported about it in their preview, where they were supposedly told that the game would have heavy RPG aspects including different gameplay for each archetype.

Basically, now I'm kind of confused.

It's the old case of "Marketing says one thing, designer says another."

Remember the hype on the back of the Fallout box? Sounds like a freaking action game with levels.
