<a href="http://www.mayhem.sk/">Mayhem</a> has unvieled <A href="http://www.mayhem.sk/index.php?l=1&r=2000">Shadow Vault</a>, a <i>turn based strategy role playing game</i>, which basically reads as <i>non-fantasy setting dungeon crawl</i> to me. There's also some <a href="http://www.bluesnews.com/screenshots/games/shadowvault/20030608/">screenshots</a> over at <A href="Http://www.bluesnews.com">Blue's News</a>.

I hope they're not going with a mission structure, but that's how the feature list looks to me. Something like <A href="http://www.jaggedalliance2.com/">Jagged Alliance 2</a>'s open map system would be much nicer.

Almost two years we have been working on the strategic RPG game Shadow Vault. It takes you to an enjoyable surrounding of a nuclear war, fighting your own ancestors with large-scale strategic and genetic resources.
I'm glad someone else finds nuclear war as enjoyable as do the RPG Codexers.

Also, I wonder if you kill too many of your ancestors, you or your soldiers cease to exist....

Being as desperate as I am for RPG's, even tactical RPG's (I'm hoping its not entirely mission based) I'm willing to put some hope in this game. The header on the screenshots says "The first shots of Shadow Vault, Mayhem Studios' upcoming turn-based strategy game," so RPG elements may well be very light. The backgrounds look pretty but the character portraits don't. I've never understood the need for portraits. In an RPG I'm me, I know what I look like. Why would I want to be reminded of that in-game? Even if I'm playing a role I still look like I do, only I have different motives.

Just a small suggestion for Rx, perhaps an article or a thread listing RPG's currently in development with approximate progress and tentative release dates, with a short precis on gameworld/gameplay type. Thankfully there are quite a few worthy of some attention like Golden Land and the H-World project (especially if it includes the generations :P ) but I'm sure there are others I'm not aware of. An Rx Recommended List of sorts.

Jagged Alliance 2 was called a role playing strategy game and came off as more of a CRPG than most of things dubbed CRPGs these days. This looks more like JA2 than Starcraft with level advancement to me.

Features such as:

  • Turn based strategy that gives the player the possibility to use and improve various special abillities of his units.
  • 40 different actions that can used during the game.
  • 36 abilities and character improvements.

Also, given the screenshots are focused on one or two characters at a time seems to suggest tactical RPG more than strat games with loose RPG elements.

You may or may not know this but, Mayhem Studios' recently released Empire of Magic, really kinda sucks. The turn-based mode is really... oh... primitive. Hopefuly this new game that they're working on will be somewhere along the lines of Jagged Alliance 2 and not Odium, or Empire of Magic.

So, if we cover games like JA2, IWD, Diablo and this one, do we cover Fallout Tactics as well?
