Yesterday's Spiderweb Software newsletter brings news that the 5th Geneforge title will conclude the series. Not much info is given, though:
After Avernum 5 for Windows, we will spend 2008 writing Geneforge 5,the final game in the Geneforge saga. We have begun piecing its storyline together, and we can promise Geneforge fans a truly unique journey.
It's also stated that Avernum 5 for Windows is to be expected in early March, 2008 - if all goes well.

After that, it's most certainly Avernum 6, since we know the series is planned to have a second trilogy. But what then? A new setting, finally?

A new setting would be nice. But if he will be milking one of his old engines (if you want to use the plural there) again, I'm not sure he needs to bother for me.

nah, he'll just rename avernum to "excelcior" or someshit and re-release it all on a new, albeit still shitty in-house engine

All new engine? Thou dost expect too much. I'd settle for him using the old Exile engine over another game with the current one.

I need to purchase one of these games eventually. Been looking at them for years. Maybe GF5 if it gets decent Codex reviews. Any suggestions?

All the Geneforge games are great, though I think 3 was the weakest of them, so I would recommend all of them. Personally, I enjoy them more then Avernum.

Geneforge 1 is fantastic but since you've presumably gone this far without trying the demos, what are the chances you'll finish 4 long games? Just start with Geneforge 4, which is also excellent, and has some nice (if minor) interface and animation tweaks that make it feel a little more friendly.

He willprobably make Baldes of Avernum 2 after A6.

Also, the g4 engine is pretty sweet. Fluid animations and all.

Nope, he has said that no more BoA type games. Too time consuming and not enough profit coming from those. Heck, BoA almost made him go bankrupt.

btw Jeff posted on his forums that he hopes to make his next series with a new engine that is 3D. That was ages ago though so he might have changed his plan.

I'd rather have a 2D engine with better looks than the one in Geneforge/Avernum than a shitty 3D engine.

Of course, if he could make or use an engine that gets close to the looks of AoD ... ;)

I wouldn't mind a new engine but what I'd really like to see is a new setting. Geneforge 1 was brilliant but 3 games later it's getting a bit old and I'm not even going to start on Exile/Avernum.

He can keep using 2D all he wants. Just anything different than the current engine that he's been using for 8 years and 10 games.

I have no problems with the Geneforge engine.

For me the Geneforge engine would revert back to melee combat no matter how many times I set spells as default... witch would result in my Shaper using his action points to walk up to the enemies and then get beaten to a bloody pulp when it was their turn... not fun
