... or so say CrispyGamer:

As Paul Semel's recent interview with a company rep demonstrates, comparisons to Oblivion come fast and easy, and Bethesda isn't much interested in entertaining them. Yet playing the game, the lineage is impossible to shake. What will happen when a vast public with hours of Oblivion experience and no working knowledge of the Fallout series gets their hands on the thing?
So why am I so unsatisfied?

Maybe it's that this demo did little to show how Fallout 3 is truly different from Oblivion. Ok, the lock-picking mini-game is slightly different (and better) but the dialogue trees, skill breakdowns and overall feel seem so much like Oblivion, at least in this early stage of the game, that the untrained eye could mistake it for a mod.

It seems ridiculous to have to form some kind of informed opinion based on a two hour toe-dip into Bethesda's stunning post-apocalyptic world, given the gargantuan nature of this sci-fi RPG, but that's what we're paid to do, so here goes. Haters be quiet - Fallout 3 is shaping up to one of the best games of 2008, and, fingers crossed, could be one of the best RPGs ever.

Best RPG ever or bad Oblivion mod? You decide! If that's not enough for you though, here are five reasons why you should love it:

The mod scene: We fully expect to see an eventual attempt at a mod that converts the entire game of Fallout 3 into the classic isometric version of the originals, complete with a classic user interface. Whether or not it works or is even good is yet to be seen, but we're sure that such a mod will in fact happen. That's how crazy-strong the mod community is for PC games that embrace it

It's okay, the modders will fix it.

Thanks Brother None!

So, it now comes in High-Def, as well, eh?...

Best RPG evar alongside with Oblivion! YAY!
But let's hold our fingers crossed - maybe Beth will pay us more and it WILL be the best RPG evar!
Judging a game by 2 hours - no it isn't enough, so you can't judge it! But haters shut up - we know it will be an uber-game because sucking Beth cock is
what we're paid to do, so here goes

I don't know... A heavily modded Oblivion can be fun, why shouldn't it be the same with FO3? It's just a Oblivion mod itself.

stunning [post-apocalyptic world]

I'd like to thank them for proving that they are ridiculous (in their own words), and thus that their opinion holds no water.

It's ridiculous to have an opinion, but they didn't waste any time on saying it was stunning on what little they know of and then telling "haters" to be quiet because it's going to be the best game of the year. How does that work? I guess "informed opinion" means "criticism" now (and is thus banned), so instead you can give a sloppy blowjob's worth of praise based on even the most meagre of information, especially by regurgitating press releases.

I tried heavily modded oblivion, and it was still boring as fuck.

I was so hyped for Oblivion, and yet I managed to read the Codex criticisms and think, nah, it'll be great! Just look at those videos, the radiant AI, it's going to be awesome.

Oh how wrong I was. I remember running out early in the morning on the release day of Oblivion to pick up the game.

Fallout 3? Meh. I've learned my lesson. I'll download it and give it a shot, but I don't expect to be very impressed. Maybe, just maybe, I'll be wrong.

A heavily modded oblivion can be fun? wat
no matter how you mod it that retarded hack'n'slash in a boring copy-pasta world full of linear dumb quests stuffed with Retarded AI will still remain. The game is shitty in its core. Nothing can save one with such diagnosis.

What game did you play? The quests, while linear as fuck, were well-designed, well-written, and easily the best part of Oblivion.

"Fetch this" and "kill that" looses its appeal after awhile (much like the clones who populate Cyrodiil) with the relentless pop-ups saying how to do it.

Yes probably we had two different versions of Oblivion. In my version quests were dumb and mostly "hey follow that marker to that dungeon/sewer/house - enter it - kill monsters/get item at the marked location - fast travel back to the quest giver"
The writing also was extremely bland and boring - traditional for Beth since forever.

The quests were mostly mediocre, but some of the Dark Brotherhood quests were quite fun because they didn't follow the usual "retrieve my lost amulet and kill 10 mudcrabs" formula. The one were you have to assassinate the guests at the dinner party one by one was really good, I thought.

It's just a shame the rest of the game sucked.

The murder mystery quest was quite good. The nightmare quest was kind of cool. Thie dinner party quest was silly. The raining dogs quest was a good laugh.

Most the others were just boring, or depressing. Very little originality.

Replace shit with streamlined and you'll get the big picture of gaming in 2008.
Spore and Mount & Blade will save us. DNF and Streets of Rage Remake too.

I think Bethseda is fucking with people at the Codex/NMA/DAC, etc with switching tunes on the Oblivion with guns thing.

And the paradox in that Videogamer excerpt is truly astounding.

How can you 'form' an 'informed' opinion?

Nevermind.
