It's been a while since I've posted about this, mainly because no one else seems very interested in this... interesting.. piece of work, but Freedroid has been updated many times since I last posted about it. Here's the update:

Story changes: Tux can now become member of the Town Guard and enter the citadel. New 'Tybalt' character acts as a simple gatekeeper. Added warning of 711 disruptor blast before entering the master arena.

Bugs fixed: No more negative money from very old items from the dungeon, fixed infinite energy bars, fixed mouse move cursor display under OpenGL, level names for arena levels fixed, background of chat text respones fixed.

New obstacles: Stone pillar, Huge stone, small stone and plant thanks to Basse. Also new tree type and tree trunk.

Shop interface cleared up and supplied with new graphics thanks to Basse.

New inventory image thanks to Basse.

Game balancing: Energy of hacked bots is now chosen more sensibly and price multipliers reduced to sane values.

Items under mouse will now be highlighted in SDL and OpenGL output (but looking a bit different each).

Speed improvements: Items on the floor now use textured quads when using OpenGL output method.

Homepage improved with new sections about the game and refined background graphics. Works now even with Internet Exploder.

Missing ingame images for laser guns and laser swords and laser staff added thanks to Basse.

I still have a hard time gelling with the idea of Tux the Linux penguin fighting the robots of Paradroid in a fantasy-like RPG setting. Other than that detail, looks pretty neat!

Thanks for the publicity!

Hi!

Thanks for the publicity you give us by posting this news. It's an honor. But my guess the low interest is due to the fact, that the releases we've published so far only run under Linux, while the preferred platform of most heavy-duty gamers is of course Microsoft Windows in one version or the other.

But in fact, we've got a Windows port in development since the previous (0.9.8) release, which alas, so far didn't have OpenGL support, so only software rendering, so we kept it private. But when my brother gets back online in two weeks or so, it might be just in time for the next release (0.9.10), which will also offer a Windows version.

B/w, maybe it's not made sufficiently clear, that this is a student-written program. Don't expect us to be really in the league of the big guns which have several professional designers and programmers and writers working full-time, while we are only a bunch of hobbyists. But if you got some ideas or want to contribute to the game in one way or another, this is the chance were you can develop the stuff. Though of course I must admit, playing super games might be more fun than making mediocre ones... :)

Thanks for all the attention. The feedback always helps a lot.

See ya, Johannes.

The state of insanity.
I've seen indy work that has outshined alot of the big productions. I am not one to gawk over flashy graphics. If a game has gameplay, then graphics can take a backseat. Your game did look interesting and I will gladly give it a try and let you know what I thought. :)

That's typically why I like independent developers more than the commercial ones these days. Most of the independent developers tend to offer more than the standard mix of popular games of last year in hopes to cash in on the success of those.

Thanks

Thanks, that's nice. I will definately drop you a note once the Windows port of the next release is on our download page. While the game engine and graphics are coming along nicely these days, the story, map and characters are still lagging behind a lot for my taste: some of it is shamelessly plugged from my favorite rpgs :)

See ya, jp.
