The makers of Galactic Civilizations have announced their intentions to open a second studio:

PLYMOUTH, MI (FEBRUARY 4, 2009) - Stardock Corporation (www.stardock.com) announced today that it is expanding its current games division and will open a second games studio in Michigan.

The new studio will create up to 50 much-needed jobs in the state of Michigan and will be responsible for an as-of-yet unannounced RPG title developed and published by independent developer Stardock Entertainment.

I'm imagining a mile long queue of sixpence wearing laid-off auto workers forming outside the stardock office, applying to work for 5 dollars a day. But the grim top hat wearing industrialist Brad Wardell turns them all away for lacking game development skills.

Brad has said they'd love to make a "Baldur's Gate" style game, so that's probably GalCiv 3 you're smelling...

I have a faint memory of someone at Stardock saying they're suprised no one has done a SoaSE, for turn-based RPGs. It might just be optimism clouding my memory though.

Look, these Stardock people are going by a very recent definition of RPG, and I seriously doubt you are going to see another Fallout from them.

Wardell wants to make a game like BG, so it's more of a Bioware style of game has in mind.

While I believe Stardock has good intentions, I question their talent in making such a game. I mean, I tried the demos for both GalCiv 2 and SOASE and even though I tried to enjoy them I just couldn't; I found them to be incredibly boring. And yes I do like 4X games a lot.
Here's hoping the game will at least be TB.

Not supporting Stardock sounds like heresy.
Their previous games might not have been to your liking, and they certainly weren't to mine, but they were undoubtedly of decent quality. Moreover, they included a number of traditional game play elements and no fucking intrusive DRM. Heck, you can count the number of dev studios that play by Interplays old motto on two fingers, and Stardock is one of them.

You don't lose shit by not being a fucking dick about Stardock making RPGs. Except, yeah, not scoring Codex Cool Points, you fucking imbeciles.

Hey, I like Stardock. I just question their ability to make a decent RPG by codex standards as this is their first foray into the world of RPGs, though judging from their other games they seem to be on the right track for making such things.

If they do make an excellent RPG, fucking great.

I honestly can't think of an easier genre to make a good games in than RPG personally. All the flopping comes from the lack of will or determination to use guidelines already there out of fear of "och..it won't sell... och it will be too niche" etc.

Hah, I live in Michigan and indeed the unemployment rate here is outrageous. Even places like CVS won't hire outside of their chain. If you don't have experience in the field you're looking for, you're fucked because nobody will train anymore.

Anyway, too bad Wayne county is all the way over in southeast Michigan. Too far from me dammit.

Not played any Stardock games. But, with RPGs so thin on the ground, it's surely a positive to have another developer entering the genre. Especially an indie developer with creative control over their development and a history of turn-based games. Will follow with interest.

Seriously man, what the fuck does that even mean? There are no standards here, every classic has adamant detractors and naysayers. No one will ever make an RPG that pleases everyone, especially everyone at the rpgier than thou codex.

The only thing standard on the codex is whining and being a douchebag.

This is great news imo. The market for turned-based top-down games is very underestimated. Those games, even if they're incredibly deep, can appeal to more "casual" gamers. I know a few non-gamers that I've tossed fallout 1 and 2 at and they loved. On the other hand, watch someone who didn't grow up playing vids try to play a first person game, they get stuck in a corner and give up.

Even if they don't go turn based, it could still be damn good. I think stardock has gotten to big to be considered "indie". Sins sold hundreds of thousands right? So they got some cash to play around with, we should see some decent production values hopefully along with good gameplay.

Best news so far this year.

Are you retarded or a plant? The meanest post before yours consisted of polite and respectful skepticism.

We can only hope it takes you another 5 years to get to 80 posts.

p.s. From look at later posts - Congratulations Stardock! You've grown big enough to have fanbois prowling the internets for your honour!

Actually this sounds pretty cool.

Maybe even turn-based and isometric, eh?

I think we can safely be optimistic, based on Stardock's previous reputation with the Galactic Civ games. Even if they weren't up your alley, they were turn-based, no-DRM, and decently deep. I'm not expecting the next Fallout from them, but any progress is good.

My only concern would be: How good are they at writing dialogue? I mean, that's a pretty important part of a Baldur's Gate-style RPG...

Ok, maybe I should have said "Similar to Fallout/Planescape quality". And I'm not talking about the shitload of bugs etc. but general cRPG characteristics.

But yeah this is good news etc. etc.

He said he wants to make a Baldur's Gate style game only with turn-based combat actually.
