RPG Vault has posted a hands on preview of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. It mentions various aspects of the game, and clears up several things as well, sch as the party based combat system, and NPCs:

You can probably try to play through with one character if you want, but gameplay is intended to be party-based. As you proceed, you'll encounter a number of NPCs that can join you. They include various races and droids, although we only saw two humans and a droid assassin. NPCs will have selectable behavior scripts, and each will have its own quests, interactions and vocal interjections. It was re-confirmed that romances will be possible. All of them can travel with you in your space vessel, the Ebon Hawk, which serves as a kind of mobile home base in your interplanetary travel. You can pick your companions for each mission, and can rotate through them in terms of choosing which one you control directly at any given moment. The party system is a bit unusual in that even though you have a main character, the entire party has to be killed before a reload is necessary. When only one or two die, they revive at the end of the battle having only one hit point. The save system will be PC-style; you can save anywhere and anytime you are not in combat or direct danger.

Bad vibes! Of course it's designed to be party based, I doubt BioWare could design a solid single player CRPG if someone bothered forcing them to do it.
