There's a preview of Bard's Tale at PC.IGN with some fun stuff in it like this:

The main drive behind the new iteration of The Bard's Tale is to create an RPG for an older audience. The Bard's Tale will not be aimed at youngins with immature writing and a simple game world. Instead, Brian and the team at InXile set out to make an RPG that would cater to an older audience (after all, the average age of gamers these days is 29, and RPG players skew even higher...especially those who have fond memories of The Bard's Tale).

I love it when previews toss something out like this with no follow up explanation as to how this will be done.

Especially when the game touts "You can be good and Smart Ass, like when you see a puppy, you can tell it to piss off 3 times! Then you can get it to dig treasure for you!"

Then slap on the whole weapon-to-gold thing and the fact it's an action RPG and not like the original...

SURE WAS MADE FOR THE "OLDER" GROUP.

holy cow, the average gaming age is 29 ? and the rpg gamer is higher ?!, does that mean that all those dumbed down games are not for kiddos but for 29 year old brainless zombies ?!

Well... just from reading the quote there, it could just be that they're going to go for maturewriting and a complex game world... but maybe that's reading a little too much into things. Or maybe I could go by the somewhat more mature-themed humour offered on their homepage... that might be an indicator of the sort of thing they're going for as well. It could even be that, the game being essentially a spoof of RPG conventions, they're assuming that people will have been playing long enough to realize what those conventions are; that if they're going to be spoofing found in the original games, they might just be assuming that people have played those game.

Dunno, though... there's just so few clues around! What could they possibly mean by "mature?" Very mysterious, that...

The original was was an action "RPG" though. The only roleplaying involved there was your party's composition and, if you were really trying to be anal about it, the type of equipment you wouldn't use, even if you were able to use it in the first place. Going back to anything more than that style of game in general is pointless.
