Obsidian's Aliens RPG may be dead but that didn't stop somebody releasing concept art.

Aliens: Crucible (also know as Project Connecticut) is an RPG based on the Aliens films franchise that was in development by Obsidian Entertainment for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. The game was going to be published by SEGA, but after some economic problems, it seems that they decided to cancel all their Aliens games. Probably Aliens: Crucible gameplay could have been similar to KOTOR II and NeverWinter Nights 2, two other RPGs developed by Obsidian.

Your ignore list.
Those guys were supposed to be melting with all the spilled acid blood from the xenomorph shooting at such a close distance.

Ehhh... boss monster in picture 20 spotted. I always feared they would fall into all the stereotypical trappings of RPG cliche's with this one.

And yet I feel sad looking at these pics, well, except for number 20. Was there ever a hint of a reason published why the plug was pulled on this one? Doesn't make sense at all, particularly given that Aliens is still a quite iconic license, the milking that was AvP or no. Except if Sega weren't convinced about what Obsidian were doing down there. "Economical reasons", that sounds like on of these phrases clouding the true meaning behind the words. If they had to cancel some games, there must have been a reason why Obsidian's belonged in there, for a start. Dirty politics, tsk.

They canceled it because after 2 years of pouring shittons of money into Obsidian it never came up even with a single screenshot. And judging by the design concepts this game had - good riddance. No really - retarded looking bosses, lots of LARPing and stealth -against aliens- (which also included blowing them up on the landmines - ~stealth~) haha wtf

These pics were news a couple of months ago when they first leaked on the Obsidian forums.

When Obsidian is working on an existing engine and a game concept, they are able to ship some semblance of a product out, selling 2 million copies at half the cost of normal game development.

When they have to actually make a full fledged product, the project does not last.

Bad management at that place.

Management aside, I thought Sawyer already explain what the word "stealth" meant in the Aliens game context.

coz none of the alien movies had boss aliens or different kinds of critters based on what the alien infected in the first place, resulting in different speed and toughness.

The character shot is rather interesting, the male characters fit the universe, especially the top one. What about the women? They seem a bit too young.

Is that meant to be sarcastic? In the second Alien flick, the Queen had all the makings of a "boss" alien.

Of course it is. Not only is the Queen a boss alien, the xenomorph in Alien 3 incorporated some of the DNA of its dog host and was different from the aliens hatched from humans.

I have to agree with what has been said - I'm glad this project was stillborn.

Just the concept that a RPG could be made in the Aliens setting is a bit mindboggling - these things tend to kill you in less than 2 seconds. How is an RPG going to get that across? You encounter an Alien - you are dead.

First-person shooters, yes. A survival horror game, oh yeah. An adventure game would work if done properly, which is absolutely what Cryo did not do with the Comic Book Adventure.

But I'm mostly glad this project died because it was a console-only title labelled a RPG, based solely on the platform it was designed for. It would propably have ended up as a Mass Effect knock-off with more blood, more closeups and more sex, however twisted that sounds.

Ripley stealthed the shit out of the alien in the original's end.

But yea, aliens being somewhere you can see them doesn't work.

As for land mines, there's an answer: The turret scene from Aliens. I always disliked what Aliens did to aliens.
