MyGamer has posted a preview of Sacred which seems to be based on the demo of the game. Here's a clip:

If you think that you are going to be playing a rehashed version of Diablo then you are sadly mistaken. Sacred offers several new elements to the game, like being able to scroll in and out on your character. There is nothing better then zooming in during the combat and seeing your enemy fall to pieces as your weapon destroys them. You can also change weapons and special moves without having to open the sub-menus. This work great for switching between ranged and close combat attacks.

Oh the utter brilliance and insight levelled in this piece is staggering.

Ever since Diablo, most PC RPG's have been pretty much the same. Sacred is no exception. You get to choose one of six characters to go out into the world and save it. Of course, why change a good concept.

Really? Wow. Hadn't noticed the similarities between Diablo and Arcanum or Morrowind.

Since I'm clearly out of my league can some kind soul explain how this is a new element of the game? New technology, sure, but . . . . ?

With all the Undead, bandits, animals, and creatures out to get your character boredom is not an option.

Nope, it was mandatory. But I know I'm in the minority here.

Frankly it sounded like a plug more than a preview. But, hey, I'm an elitist snob who doesn't think the BG series should be counted as CRPGs let alone Diablo.[/quote]

Gamespy seems to have turned into another overglorified advertising shop. It seems that their assessments are directly proportional to the advertising budget. Gamespot is still decent, but they are already heading the same way. The bigger titles get reviewed by the core staff, but lesser known game always get handed off to freelancers or less active reviewers. I'm not even mentioning IGN.

I came really close to quoting and commenting on that line about how most CRPGs since Diablo have been like Diablo. Diablo came out in 1996, and since then, we've had Fallout, Fallout 2, Planescape: Torment and all the other IE games, Arcanum, ToEE, Prince of Qin, Gothic and Gothic 2, and the list goes on and on.

Well, if you have a good mouse wheel, you can zoom in and out really fast, repeatedly, and pretend you're Ed Wood.

But, hey, I'm an elitist snob who doesn't think the BG series should be counted as CRPGs let alone Diablo.

I don't mind a little action CRPG every now and then, but I'm happier playing something like Fallout most of the time. I do like the spreadsheety stuff found in the action CRPGs, though.
