Is this game going to have NetHack-type gameplay?

But there's a great deal of differences, such as the style of combat, the attention to character detail in Roguelikes, etc etc. I believe they're seperate enough to not consider Diablo a roguelike.

There are some very simple roguelikes out there. Not all of them are as complex as Nethack or ADOM. The original Moria was pretty simple, IIRC. Diablo 2, BTW, probably has one of the most complex item-character interaction systems out there when you consider all the things items can affect like:

  • Movement Speed
  • Casting rate
  • Attack Speed
  • Healing rate
  • Mana regeneration rate
  • Health after a kill, either a set number or a percentage
  • Mana after a kill, either set numer or percentage
  • Add skill levels either for a specific skill or a specific skill set or all skills
  • Prevent attacked object's heal
  • Raise abilities
  • Bonus to total, minimum or maximum defense/damage
  • Bonus to damage percentage based on monster type
  • Bonus to primary or secondary attributes
  • and about a couple dozen more things!

An item can affect pretty much everything in the character model.

True, but he did ask if it was like Nethack, which I don't believe Diablo to be similar to. Nethack was TB, which is a pretty big difference. Also, Nethack had class/race character system, where Diablo only had classes. Nethack also features very interesting ways to die, like starvation or falling down a flight of stairs. Diablo didn't. Diablo's gameplay was more mouse-oriented while Nethack was centered largely around the keys. Nethack also had the darndest confusing religion system I've come across in a while.

I guess in its very core, Nethack and Diablo are both Hack'n Slash l00ters, but I still wouldn't consider Diablo and Nethack to be similar games.

The state of insanity.
I just said it was inspired by. At it's extremely base root, it is a rogue-like. Random dungeons, random items, etc. But it definitely evolved the rogue-like into something of it's own genre. There are still alot of aspects to rogue-likes that aren't a part of Diablo and vice versa.

Don't forget the randomize shrine thing in the original Diablo, which is a very rogue-like concept. Of course, Diablo 2 did away with that, so meh. Diablo 1's books->spells system is pretty rogue-like as well.

However, Diablo 2 focuses HEAVILY on items. And I mean HEAVILY. Look at all the things that items not only do, but what can be done with them as of the expansion pack. You can add gems to items to make them more powerful. You can add runes to items which give special abilities. If you add the right runes in the right order, you end up with a runeword item which does a lot of cool stuff. You can craft items if you have the right recipe and the Horadric Cube.
