Gamebanshee eventually expressed their feelings towards BioWares latest masterpiece.

The tone of this review is mostly negative, but that’s not because Mass Effect 2 is a thoroughly bad game. It’s just a slimmed-down action game, which is disappointing to me -- and, I’m assuming, to anybody else who was hoping for an actual role-playing game. If BioWare is going to spend two years to create a game, I just wish they’d set their sights higher than what they produced in Mass Effect 2.

But the production values are once again excellent (and all of the voice actors from the original game returned to reprise their roles), the engine looks better and runs much more smoothly than it did before (saves and loads are almost instantaneous, and all of the interminably long elevator rides disappeared), BioWare did a fantastic job of incorporating characters and events from the original game into the new one (even the guy looking for a refund on the Citadel is back), and while the PC version didn’t receive quite the same amount of love that it did last time, everything still works pretty well, and the game didn’t crash on me once.

It’s just that the dialogue, equipment, character choices, game decisions, puzzles, and depth all took a big hit, and BioWare chose to focus on somewhat repetitive combat over everything else. Plus, the storyline isn’t great. Mass Effect 2 seems much more like a set-up for Mass Effect 3 than as a game that was meant to stand on its own.

And so this is going to be a mixed review. If you’re one of those people who doesn’t particularly like wading through dialogue, or sorting through equipment, or figuring out which character build makes you the most powerful, then Mass Effect 2 might be a good game for you. But if you’re more on the Dragon Age: Origins side of the role-playing game spectrum, then there might not be much for you in Mass Effect 2, unless you’re just looking for a change of pace.

Mass Effect 2: Combat still garbage. Not as funny as first. Story sucks. Characters are better overall (of the few I met). Played 6 hours and threw away. With DA/ME2 I think I am done with bioware games.

Good for what it is...

The review is fuckin' retarded. It's that simple. FFS Even things IO agreed with it, and screwed the fuck up. FFS

it’s not even as compelling an action game as the original.

Excuse me.

While in Mass Effect you had to talk to people and solve puzzles and make weighty decisions, in Mass Effect 2 you mostly just kill stuff, and sometimes the missions don’t feel like anything more than extended shooting galleries.

There are non-combat quests in ME2. They are of a primitive "talk to this guy", "deliver this" or "hack this" variety (just like in ME1), but they do exist. Also, could anybody remind me of ME1's "weighty decisions"?

but BioWare abandoned puzzles completely

The Tower of Hanoi, we miss you so much.

How is that? Both are pretty much straight Xbox ports with tweaked interface. Only ME2 isn't artifically delayed and is better optimized + no retarded DRM schemes.

"Somewhat repetitive combat": lol, you've just noticed that? Or ME1 was such a deep game without combat focus?

Kill/don't kill Rachni queen, kill/don't kill mind controlling alien creature - that kinda stuff. Of course, whatever you did had no effect on the game whatsoever. But I hear if you saved the Rachni queen you get an email from her in ME2 LOL.

You received message from a mind controlled Asari which worked for her because she saved her life from pirates.

You receive email about these creatures on the citadel. (Which implies these creatures were not made by reapers.)

Don't mess these two things.

BTW you also receive two spam emails.

People are so afraid to call a bad RPG what it is, a bad RPG.

"but it's a good FPS"

"but it has good production values"

"but it has a good story"

etc

Mass effect 2 is not an rpg and even mediocre as a shooter, accept it.

Bioware isn't in the business of making RPGs but interactive movies, they just aren't owning up to it yet. Has been like that since KOTOR took the engine of NWN and tried to make the dialogue feel cinematic. ME2 "streamlined" (dumbed down) gameplay mechanics reflect on that. A decade from now I bet the only "gameplay" you'll find in Bioware "games" will be to activate a Paragon or a Renegade interrupt while the movie plays off making it feels like one of those "choose your own adventure" books where it branches off mostly binary choices.

He's been making that jab repeatedly for a while now. I'm not sure I get it.
It was intended as a jab the first time I made it, but since then I realized what an awesome name Instant Classic Archives is.
Just imagine the image: vast hallways where the steps are echoing, 10m high shelves that can be climbed only with big ladders, containing all available information about the instant classics of all epoches , hooded banshee clerics studying them and protecting them with their lives if need arises. Dark catacombs breathing power and at the deepest point the sacred crypta, protected by an order of banshee templars devoted entirely to its protection: A glowing crystal containing the last remaining working DVD of BG2.
I think GB should grab the domain InstantClassicArchives.com asap.

So, no hard feelings BN, ok?
