<A href="http://nwn.bioware.com">Neverwinter Nights</a> has won an <a href="http://www.bombine.com/emma/index1.asp?part=emma">EMMA</a> for <A href="http://www.bombine.com/emma/index1.asp?part=win&page=sub&id=34">best multiplayer game of 2002</a>. Of course, the two other nominees were <a href="http://www.family.ca/clickclub">Clickclub</a> and <A href="http://www.slotsandthecity.com/">Slots in the City</a> for the award, so it's not like there was much competition.

Hell, anyone even heard of the other two? I sure hadn't.

Wow. NWN is well and truly up there with all the greats.

Yeah, where's Dungeon Siege, Unreal Tournament 2003, Battlefield 1942, Warcraft 3, etc?

It's fucking hysterical they nominate NWN and two web based games, one being a casino themed one, and the other being some flash game site.

Not even a very good flash game site as far as I can see. Tsk tsk.

Beyond the obscurity of the runners-up, what the fuck is an EMMA?

What is EMMA?
The International EMMAs (Electronic Multimedia Awards) recognise excellence in digital media content creation through the acknowledgement of best practice and ongoing educational programmes.
Celebrating its 11th anniversary this year, this European based international awards programme attracts entries from over 40 countries and has the widest reach of any digital awards event worldwide.
The EMMAs are respected for their independence and impartiality and are widely recognised as the most prestigious interactive media awards. The EMMAs are organised in conjunction with an international steering committee comprising experts from all sectors of the industry and the sole objective of the competition is to reward excellence.
In line with this policy, a single award is presented in each category, but only where the high standards that have become synonymous with the EMMA name have been achieved.

Apparently......

I just had to email these guys..

Tom,

What the hell is the point of pitting NWN up against two browser
based games for multiplayer gaming?

That's like arranging a boxing bout between Mike Tyson and two
guys randomly selected from Gold's Gym membership and
expecting some form of credibility to the match.

Where's Warcraft 3 in that nomination list? Battlefield 1942? Unreal
Tournament 2003? Prince of Qin? Hell, ANYTHING remotely able
to compete with NWN?

For an award to actually MEAN something, you actually have to
have to have, at very least, the ILLUSION of competition there.
Otherwise, it's nothing more than a lame joke, which is what that
EMMA is.

I think that sums it up.

I wonder if they're planning to compete for the Webby Awards, another big joke. You have sites like GameSpot.com and Yahoo! contend against smallfry like KellyX (not his site, but sites just like his, for instance.), and pornstars present the awards. They're credited as model/professional actresses.

How amusing.

Hah. I'll bet those doctor guys were the only ones at the ceremony, and gave a speech something along the lines of "NWN is the definitive PC RPing experience." ...then they ducked into the mens' room to get smacked up and bat each other off.

It's more like the Heads Up Their Asses Award.

It's really poor that their nomination for these awards is so damn sporadic or they just look into a search engine to find something to look like they know what they are doing. Either that, or someone asked their kids what would be good.

Fuck, both of those runner-ups have NOTHING on www.mohsye.com

It's a pity that clueless trash such as these people, like the folks that gave Fallout Tactics a "Best CRPG" award, don't even count other good games as also-rans with additional insult that two crap sites are runners up when there's even better games past NWN.

Note : This is my opinion only .

I have heard in general that most of those kinds of awards have been bought with real money .

I have no idea if this is the case here .

BioWare doesn't need to pay people to get awards. I think that over the numrous years of NWN's development, BioWare developed biomechanical brain parasites that they inserted into game journalists brains whenever they would do an interview about their games. This parasite would rewire synapses and nerves to make reviewers ignore the numerous flaws in the game and then give it ridiculously high scores and numerous awards.

On that note, I think we should start a pool on how many Game of the Year awards NWN is going to get.

Yep. Like PCPowerplay giving NWN a Best Game of All Time! award in the same issue that they "reviewed" it. Funnily enough, in the previous 6 months, there were 3 full games released on the coverdisk. Anyone want to hazard a guess at which publisher gladly "donated" those games?

PCPowerplay are generally fairly impartial, but that shit was fucking blatant.

They sure did.
That was because the editor at the time was a rabid Deus Ex fanboy.
It was the main reason I stopped buying that magazine.

I gave it another try a year or so later, and they were all graphics whores. So I didn't buy it again.
