<a href="http://www.rpgdot.com">RPGDot</a> has posted <a href="http://www.rpgdot.com/index.php?hsaction=10053&ID=470">SPECIAL System #8</a>, which covers <i>More Racial Traits</i> in <a href="http://www.lionheart.com">Lionheart</a>. Here's a sample:
<br>
<br>
<blockquote><b>Bloody Talons</b>
<br>
<br>
Description: You have fiendishly razor sharp claws that allow you to rip into your opponents. While you gain +4 to Unarmed Combat and +5 to your unarmed damage, manipulating these razors can be difficult for you. You thus suffer a -8 to your Missile Weapons and Lockpick skills. This trait will mark you as tainted by magic, causing some people to react negatively to you.
<br>
<br>
Game Rules: +4 Unarmed Combat, +5 unarmed damage, -8 Ranged Combat, -8 Lockpick
<br>
<br>
Noticeable Taint: Yes</blockquote>
<br>
<br>
Bloody talons could also be used to describe what <a href="http://www.blackisle.com">BIS</a> was using to cling to the Infinity Engine for so long!

Acid blood doesn't sound very appealing. Even if you got ass raped for 100 damage, you are only dealing 10 back, presuming your enemy has no acid resistance, you're losing 20% off all of your damage resistances, and you're tainted. Throw "Backlash" into the mix and you can do the same thing with a spell that doesn't incur the massive penalties.

That glass is well more than half empty.

Hey Saint, if you see Eric, show him this thread.

After reviewing the traits, I can't help but think that most of them need a serious overhaul. The 'bad' stuff from the traits is way off and the good parts about them hardly make up for it.

Yeah, the only reason why they'd ever be used would be if they were to add that you MUST pick 2 or so traits.

Description: The introduction of impish blood into your family has given you a barely noticeable bifurcation on your tongue. The forked tongue allows you to charm your way through difficult encounters, giving you +15 to your Speech skill. Your reliance on diplomacy caused you to neglect your combat training, so you have a -5 on all combat skills, but you can pass as human unless other traits mark you as tainted.

Game Rules: +15 Speech, -5 Evasion/Unarmed Combat/One-Handed Combat/Two-Handed Combat/Ranged Combat

Noticeable Taint: No

This is pretty pathetic as well. First of all, what the hell does have a physical forked tongue have to do with speech? If anything, having a forked tongue should give you a speech impediment.

Furthermore, as if the bonus for this trait didn't make little sense, the weaknesses don't either. Because you can talk well, you didn't have to learn combat skills? So, you never spent time hunting? No one ever noticed your malformity and picked a fight with you because of it?

If anything, this trait should work exactly the OPPOSITE of how it does.

The more I hear about these things, the more it appears it's going to be some Inbred Engine clone with the same crappy development, but just using the SPECIAL system.
