DarkUnderlord has informed me that there's an interview with Leon Boyarsky about that Bloodlines thing they've been trying to pitch lately. Here's a little clip about cussing:

Terra-Arcanum: We understand that there's swearing in the game. Now I'm all for freedom of speech, and the extra expletive or two can be fun in context. However, some games seem to develop a habit of taking it overboard and using it excessively (just because we can swear, we will). They seem to have some need to meet their expletive quota. Is there any of that in Bloodlines or have you managed to restrain yourselves, fuckin' aye?

Leonard Boyarsky: As hard as it has been, we've managed to restrain ourselves. We didn't set out to make some great statement about freedom of speech and swearing in our game, we just decided to not restrict ourselves when developing the dialogs, as we were already pretty assured of receiving a Mature rating. Basically, we just want to have believable, interesting characters that talk like real people - so if we're creating a character in the World of Darkness that would swear, then they will swear.

Restrained swearing? Both fans of Fallout Enforcer will be displeased!

Thanks, DarkUnderlord!

I have to admit, I share the editor's concern that the game could unintentionally veer into the cheesy soft-porn realm. Not to mention the self-absorbed overly-serious goth route. I swear, if I hear one single word from an NPC about having to become one with the darkness inside me, they're gonna get fanged.

I really hope it wasn't a Terra Arcanum typo when Leon reffered to the twitched based gaming. It makes me think of Leon as a grumpy old man clad in a thick, fuzzy bathrobe, reluctant to change his ways, and actually gives me hope there might be some grognard spirit in the game.

Leon should put on his loafers, grab a glass of milk and a digestive biscuit from the icebox and relax in his comfy chair while listening to Louis on the wireless.

So I guess the guys at Troika better keep their eyes open for an elvish girl with fangs out to get them? Mysticism, in all the possible forms, are what vampires are all about in the Masquerade and will be in the game. There's at least one character who will come up with the most incredible mumbo jumbo-talk. They could make Bloodlines into a Lost Boys-ish game, but we don't want that do we?

As for swearing; as long as they restrain from using profanity in incredible amounts, I'm happy. Then again; it's good fun to hear a bit of f-words now and then in games.

Hey, what's wrong with Lost Boys? I liked that movie.

And as for employees, does anyone know Troika's current tally? I know the Nivbed mentioned in the interview is Justin Cherry, Manley's handpicked replacement - and that Chris Glenn (the man behind the MYSTARY concept art) unfortunatly moved on to a console-only company owned by his friends. WHY CHRIS?! :(

And what's the deal? Has Huy left? Now that would be really sad.

(seemingly Troikas employee page was updated recently. Lot of old names missing)

There's nothing wrong with Lost Boys. It's a good movie. I was just imagining things. Carry on.

I was just looking at the Troika page myself and noticed that a few familiar names are no longer. Wonder what happened to them?

That's a bummer....Chris Glenn's artwork was pretty impressive.....even caused some movement in my pants.

Doesn't he frequent these boards? Maybe he can fill us in......

I don't mind a bit of mysticism, and I think the White Wolf universe (what I know of it, which isn't a whole lot) sounds fairly interesting. What I'm hoping is that the writers are good enough that the NPCs don't sound like my younger sister's friends from when she went through her Goth phase back in high school. That'd be sad.

Oh some of them will. Particularly the toreador. The clans fall into stereotypes really quickly.
There are always exceptions, but it would be even more strange if there wasn't at least some stereotypical behavior. Its why they are stereotypes. Wouldn't be proper otherwise.

I mean if there are no master manipulator Ventrue, no dark and sinister magical master Tremere, no effeminate artiste whiny toreador and no 'in yo face gansta' brujah, it would just be odd. Besides, to properly undercut the stereotypes with clever commentary, you have to establish them first, then break them later.

Nosferatu here. I'll probably come out sounding like I've got something stuck in my throat and therefore have a need to whisper my words very softly, in a somewhat 'impatient' manner. Garrett lives!

I'll be Gangrel, from what I know, who are like vampire people versions of the Feral Kid from Mad Max 2.

Dudes!...the whole idea for the Brujah clan is ripped straight out of the Lost Boys. Biker punks in leather with mohawks and swinging chains, yeah.Vampire is the bestest ever game because it collects every possible myth and/or story of vampires and mashes it all into one homogenous blob of evil.

P.s. I hope troika used biker brujah, and not pansy ass gangsta brujah.

Huh, I always thought of brujah as more wild, though I guess that would fit sabbat well enough...

There are probably both. There was after all, an 'L.A. by Night' sourcebook a while back, and LA was an Anarch Free State, and lots of Anarchs are Brujah. On the other hand a lot might have gotten killed when the Camarilla moved back in and reestablished a presence. Throw in Sabbat hunting packs and Cathayan incursions...
But anyway, the Brujah presence (in the sourcebook) was split into several subgroups (based largely on the different neighborhoods of L.A.) South central had more of the gangsta feel with vamps influencing the Crips and the Bloods. But in some of the more outlying areas, biker gangs were definitely present.

Depends on your idea of 'normal' vampire, I'd imagine.

Nosferatu would be the norm if you like horror-movie vampires, Brujah if you like the punk-ish kind, Toredore for you Anne Rice weirdoes, Gangrel are based off abilites of classic vampires (bat, wolf and mist form) but are their own dealy, and so on.

And I will be.....

I'm gonna play Count Chocula, the affable, but lovable cutesy non-vampire vampire. He was subtly the most powerful vampire of all - uh he could go out in the light of day. Also, apparently he was not completely dependant on the blood of the living - no, he could supplement his diet with chocolate cereal, yummy. Get this, he is cuddling up to your children, selling them some criminally sweet cereal, then - ZAP, POW, BITE he's latched on to their throats while you are still in bed, sucking the life out of your little ones. Now tell me that doesn't make him a real badass live evil dude.

Im surprised no one has said Kain from Blood Omen yet.

I'm surprised, too - pleasantly.

(Though, in all fairness, I should admit to a soft spot for the 3 Soul Reaver games. :D )
