Basically, you make a scenario with the editor for the game, then you submit it to them by June 1st of 2005, and well, here's the details:

Blades of Avernum is an adventure that never ends. Anyone with time and energy can create new adventures and share them with Avernum fans all over the world. All you need is the Scenario Editor, which can be downloaded from the Scenario Workshop.

Spiderweb Software wants to reward these creators for their hard work. That's why we're announcing the Blades of Avernum Scenario Design Contest! Design a scenario and submit to Spiderweb Software by June 1, 2005, and you can win big prizes:

2nd Prize - $300
3rd Prize - $200
Yeah. It's kinda clunky. Very reminiscent of an old Mac program ported to Win16. Still, it built Geneforge 2...

That's one heck of a long time until the competition ends b t w, what's the reason for that? Won't spiderweb have released at least 2 more games by then?

I'm tempted. But then I haven't seen the editor... hehe.

Actually a kind of topic question,
would like to learn to use an rpg editor and I was considering the one blades, I like the spiderweb games and I like indie companies.
is it too complicate for a absolute beginner?I never even opened an editor before.
If this is the case, any recommendation of what to try to learn the stuff?
thanks

Download the editor and give it a try. Read the documentation. You don't have to register until you want to play the results.

I finished the demo scenario 2 days ago. It was good and reminded me of Geneforge at times. I'd certainly buy the full version if only Spiderweb Software cared to answer their mail.

I'm just crazy enough to try this. $500 US! That's like $1,000,000,000,000 Australian dollars! WOOHOO!

Though with such a long date before the end of the competition...

Using game editors actually isn't such a bad place to start. Buy the game, download the tools, try it out and ask questions in their forum if you get stuck.
