RPG Vault has put up the chat logs of last night's IRC chat with Bioware about Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Here's something insanely funny:

in reguards to the control. I meant can you play to your own style. Like a button just swings your saber and takes damage but then to do feats, force powers, etc, we would turn to the menu or whatever. or will it be as noticable as NWN that we dont really have control of the player. He swings and fights by himself, etc

JamesOhlen: Ahhh...It will be a noticeable turn based system similar to NWN. Button mashing won't make your character swing faster. Each character operates on his own personal combat round. This is how combat worked in the BG series and in NWN. I must add that combat looks much more involved that anything we have done before. There is parrying, flips and blaster bolt deflection. Combat really does look similar to the duels in the movies.

Hey, I got ripped off! My copy of NWN wasn't turn based. I got the copy with the crappy real time with pause combat.

/me opens up RetardedtDevs.txt.
/me finds the line with Romero and stares at it a while.
/me goes a line above and copy/pastes down James Ohlen.

I'll also definitely steer clear away from this game, since it has the stupid uninvolving combat of the Inbred Engine games.

The pathfinding would also be beaten by an A* modification compiled by an epileptic kitten.

Well, there go my hopes for interactivity.

Each character operates on his own personal combat round. This is how combat worked in the BG series and in NWN. I must add that combat looks much more involved that anything we have done before. There is parrying, flips and blaster bolt deflection. Combat really does look similar to the duels in the movies.

i.e. the game plays itself. You just watch it and try not to get bored to death. We're going to make sure you don't get as bored as you did playing Neverwinter Nights by implimenting more combat animations!

Jeez. How about they try implimenting INTERACTIVITY for once?

And they expect to keep the console kiddie's attention with this totally passive garbage? There had better be a lot of lightsaber colours...

It's funny, I've heard people saying "KOTOR looks pretty nice, have you seen the sabre combat?" to which I reply "Did you know that shit is all automatic and you just select a target?" they usually reply "Oh. That sucks."

Yup, that's the long and short of it really. I don't know where they got the idea that clicking on a target and watching was fun. In NWN, you at least had spells you could punch a function key for every so often, so I'm guessing Force Powers will be the same way, only I doubt there are nearly as many of them as there are in D&D.

Click on monster/bad guy, every now and then, hit F5. THAT'S GREAT COMBAT!

It's even more sad that BioWare has taken it upon itself to call that type of system, turn based, too.

It kind of reminds me of MicroSoft. They get powerful in an area, then they start rewriting the conventions of that area.

All I can say about KOTOR is UGH.

Hey Saint - my copy wasn't turn based either! Maybe we should complain ;)
