Gearhead 0.842 has been released of the super duper stompy robot roguelike. There's also a new graphics file for the updated version. Here's the changes:

- Added NOMOUSE config file option (ui4gh.pp)
- Fixed out-of-action lancemate mecha bug (arenaplay.pp)
- Characters on big maps will be represented by tiny sprite (sdlmap.pp)
- It is now possible to disassemble unwanted robots (pcaction.pp)
- Can no longer use Mecha Engineering on personal equipment (backpack.pp)
- Waiting for weapon recharge now waits for slow weapons (pcaction.pp)
- Fixed some more overflow bugs (ability.pp)

The guardians have a new story (needs some more work but playable now), there are a few new things to discover, and that's about it.

The more scrapping features, the better.

Frowning at my monitor as I read your dumb post.
Ok, I'm completely confused.

I unzipped the sdlwin file then unzipped the sdlimage file into the Gearhead directory per the readme. When I start the game I get graphics but it pegs my CPU and I can barely move the mouse.

I downloaded the 841doswin file from the main site and that runs the ascii version which normally I would be fine with but I sort of wanted some graphics this time around.

Anyone care to give me a pointer here?

I'm having the same problems, both with .841 and this release. I also get a black line that scrolls through the graphics screen. If we're lucky Joseph will drop by.

What's this game about? From the screenshots I can't tell if it's an RPG or an action game, TB or RT, etc.

Its easily the best RPG I've played in the last 12 months. Open ended with lots of exploring, a huge arsenal of weapons, factions, turn based personal and mech combat (and mech customization,) and loads of skills that are actually usefull. All of this is backed up by a very solid point-buy skill system.

I have the same problem as other people - it's really, really slow for some reason. Impossible to play because of this.

Damnit, now I really want to play but I'm not interested in playing with ascii graphics today, mainly because I don't want to have to learn what every symbol means. Its a lazy weekend.

Do you play with ascii graphics or with the graphics file? If the latter, are you running the new version?

I joined the dev list and others are complaining 8.42 runs too slow. Here is the response:

I've uploaded a pre-release of v0.842 to
gearhead.roguelikedevelopment.org, only this one has
been compiled to run on a 640x480 screen instead of
800x600. Try it and let me know if the speed improves
any.

Changes to v0.842, which I hope to release officially
tomorrow, include:

- Mouse now works for movement (pcaction.pp)
Several known bugs already; more on those with the
release.
- Added NOMOUSE config file option (ui4gh.pp)
- Fixed out-of-action lancemate mecha bug
(arenaplay.pp)
- Characters on big maps will be represented by tiny
sprite (sdlmap.pp)
- It is now possible to disassemble unwanted robots
(pcaction.pp)
- Can no longer use Mecha Engineering on personal
equipment (backpack.pp)
- Waiting for weapon recharge now waits for slow
weapons (pcaction.pp)
- Fixed some more overflow bugs (ability.pp)

Not a lot of changes for an entire month of work, I
know. There are also two new lancemates and a couple
of new plots. Also uploaded to

gearhead.roguelikedevelopment.org is "CombatQuest",
which is my old Wizardry-stlye games engine coupled
with a random plot generator experiment that can't be
seen in the game yet because the levels aren't
connected and I haven't added event scripting yet.
Anyhow it's vaguely cute, uses monster tiles provided
by David Gervais, and might be of mild interest to
some. Also open source so maybe someone out there
could take it and turn it into a real game.

I'm going to try to download the other build he referred to and give it a look see.

Here's how to get the latest SDL install working on a windows box:

Download:

http://gearhead.roguelikedevelopment.or ... sdlwin.zip
http://gearhead.roguelikedevelopment.or ... limage.zip

Unzip gh-0842-sdlwin.zip, that is the main install. Then copy the Images folder from the gh-0842-sdlimage.zip archive and move it to the Gearhead directory you got when you unzipped gh-0842-sdlwin.zip.

Then make a text file called 'arena.cfg' in the Gearhead directory with nothing but the word "WINDOW" in it. You can try it without this file but it runs in full screen mode and I got a bunch of flickering that made it unplayable.

Run arena.exe and play. It's actually a very, very good game so far, I really like it.

Does this fix the slowdown that some people, including me, were experiencing?
