There's a bit of the background story of Dungeon Siege 2 over at 1Up. It's all about this bad guy or something who unites the world and ushers in a good time while killing people that don't like him and things like that. Here's a clip:

History tells us the First Age began when the giant Zaramoth smote the last of his kin the Utgards, sealing his grip over the magics of Aranna for a thousand years and shifting the stars across the heavens. Zaramoth shepherded that age of relative peace with an iron hand; rebellions were not tolerated, men, elves, and dwarves prospered beneath the shadow of absolute justice. Even the Agallans in the far East, destined to live a life of peace, declined to challenge Zaramoth's command of the continent of Aranna despite their distaste for his cold morality.

For centuries, the only people Zaramoth permitted to channel magics from the River of Souls were his dark inquisitors, and even then only to carry out justice against those who failed to observe the commanding rule of the Empire. Magic was ordained too dangerous for citizens to wield, and Zaramoth himself was the only being fit to command it. Even to this day there are those who still believe this to be true, and yearn to return to a time where magic does not fall into the hands of the unjust and irresponsible.

Nothing like a good smoting to start off an age of dark prosperity and stuff. That's the way the story starts, at least.

That does sound interesting enough, but I doubt the setting has much bearing on the gameplay. I thought this was cute:

rebellions were not tolerated

I'd love to see a setting where that isn't the case.

It's basically just a 'GUESS WHO THE LAST BOSS IS' thing.

I don't know about that. I think the guy is long, long dead, but I'd say something of his legacy is involved in the story of the game.

Yeah, but all that magic stuff. He's either gonna be some crazy zombie thing or people are trying to bring him back BUT YOU CAN STOP HIM with automated combat.

= really crappy writing. Reads like a high-schooler channeling R.A. Salvatore.

Patrick, if you have nothing worthwhile to contribute to the thread I'd suggest taking a little time to come up with something besides "OH ITS GOING TO SUCK ITS GOING TO HAVE AUTOMATED COMBAT AND 3D IT SUCKS I HAVENT PLAYED IT BUT IT SUCKS!" which pretty much sums up all the posts you've made in the past month.

What the hell?

I'm hoping he's wrong about DS2, but then again, DS sold a bunch of copies so I can see GPG and MS thinking they should do MOTS with DS2 - including the automated combat.

Hopefully not. Legends of Aranna sold pretty poorly inspite of the sales figures of the original game so I doubt they'd make the same mistake twice. It'd take a fool to do that. Or Herve Caen.

Please. It's DS2. It's gonna keep DS1's 'strengths' ie. it's gonna suck.

Legends of Aranna came out a good while after though, people had probably finished the first game gotten bord and moved on. by the time the expantion came out they might not have wanted to see more goblins in retared tanks.
