The Border House editorializes about the treatment of sexuality in Fallout: New Vegas.

“Why hasn’t some lucky man scooped this bachelor off his feet?”

In the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout 3, sex is serious business – so serious, in fact, that it’s generally mentioned in the most euphemistic fashion possible, and you could get burned.

(I may be unreasonably bitter on that one. How was I to know that when I “rented a room” I would lie on a bed with a waitress and then get up again?)

Unlike the first two entries in the Fallout series, in which a PC could flirt with and marry same-sex partners, it’s mostly straight as an arrow. Play a female character and you can have the “room rental” scene with the waitress, but there is no opportunity to flirt with the women of the wasteland. A perk gives access to damage bonuses against and special conversation options with the opposite sex, but there is no same-sex equivalent.

So you may imagine my delight when, trundling around the wasteland of New Vegas killing wolves and stealing beer bottles, I discovered a new perk: “Confirmed Bachelor”.

Cue much speculation from my partner and me. Did that mean…? Well, the picture DID have a man looking deviously at another man in bed… But maybe the game makers just meant the damage bonus thing… Wait! There were gay conversation options! There were female gay conversation options! You could have gay AND straight conversation options!

Sexuality in vidya games very much concerns the CRPG genre. One moment you built a kickass party and eradicated all hostiles, next you know is you're watching an awkward soft-porn cutscene of Geralt fucking Triss from behind. Sexuality. Go with the times, nerd.

NV has been out since October last year and just because some fag just recently discovered that you could fuck other dudes in the game it deserves a headline here?

Oh yeah that was great, so blazé, as if I was talking to one of the "girls" from sex&the city.

Obsidian can't do settings for shit.

For fuck's sake 10 Years ago every game had to have lava in it. Every single game, even Need For Speed. Then when this Next Gen shit started the lava was gone, but then every game had to be grey and brown, and have lots of motion blur and bloom.

Now there's a new scourge on the horizon: every game has to have "romances" (and especially gay romance) in it.

Uh, there is.

EDIT: Oh, he meant Fallout 3. Nevermind.

Games do still have Lava™ in it, unfortunately. And the sewers. For fuck's sake why is it that every little hamlet or small town HAS TO HAVE some massive sewage system which is perfectly enough to allow humans to walk through? Have devs ever seen a sewer in their fucking lives?

Anyway you have a good point. All games will now have to feature Lava™ and Buttsecks™ (well, and probaly Sewers™, at this point). Even The Sims. Even Barbie Adventure. Even fucking Minesweeper.

You wrote that article didn't you?

Edit: Reread the article, turns out it was written by a chick. Unless...

If it's bothering you that much you can always leave. Wouldn't make much of a difference to us honestly.

I think it's appropriate that there's plenty of good old butthurt in this thread, considering the topic in question.

If anything I found that sexuality was pushed a bit too much to the fore with New Vegas. Admittedly, it handled it well enough, but it seems like just about every female character you come across is a lesbian/bisexual, and something like what, three of the companion characters aren't straight either? Maybe they wanted to avoid having a token gay, or make sure those perk options had enough uses, but either way a lot of the time it comes off as a bit inappropriate or at least unnecessary.

Relationships/sexuality in video games always feel forced and stupid and never really add anything significant to the game play.

The Border House is a blog for gamers. It's a blog for those who are feminist, queer, disabled, people of color, transgender, poor, gay, lesbian, and others who belong to marginalized groups,

While she's at it someone should tell the bitch to add "crpg fans". Everyone else seems to be included.

Female PCs could do some unreciprocated flirting with Tandi, Sinthia, and Laura but that's it I think.

The Black Dude cometh (for the Fo2 unofficial patch).

He has no reason for bitching anymore (someone should edit that cafe of broken dreams dialog too).
