RPS started to reveal the secret behind the awesomeness of Deus Ex: Human Revolution's boss battles:

Right, so here’s the first step in answering the mystery of Deus Ex: Human Revolution’s boss battles – they were outsourced. Meaning, a lack of continuity during the development process, one has to assume. That’s not a condemnation of the work done by G.R.I.P., the company responsible for the bosses, who will have their own story to tell. As I said in my review of the game, the real story of how they happened will likely come out in a few years time, once enough people have moved on to be willing to explain. So why such a feature was outsourced, why there wasn’t a coherence between them and the rest of the game, and why they weren’t just ditched when it became clear they didn’t fit in, are questions that will perhaps one day be answered. But not yet. But as a magazine noticed, there’s a behind-the-scenes video with GRIP’s president discussing the battles that quietly appeared last month. So yes, this information was always out there. You can see it below.

why would you waste money on outsourcing boss battles when it makes perfect sense for your game not to have any at all?

Both GRIP and Eidos fucked up pretty bad with the boss battles. GRIP made a random shooter out of DX, while Eidos obviously screwed up the requirements and approval.

How the fuck do you outsource a segment of your game like that? It's like an author outsourcing one single chapter from his book to another author.
Ugh. DOES NOT COMPUTE

Yeah, let's hope that public outrage will make developers cease such an utterly retarded practice.

This is bullshit.

The boss battles aren't that bad considering what GRIP had to deal with ie, putting boss battles in a game where that was totally not appropriate. The guys to be blamed are the ones who decided there'd be unskippable boss batles. Seriously, after that fucked up game design decision, what could have done GRIP ?

The boss battles were very easy imo(without using the in-game cheat called Typhoon).Basically you need to pump half your spare ammo into them or a few grenades,Jensen is vulnerable but thanks to his lame HP regeneration you will win sooner or later.I am not saying that it was brilliant or good but it shouldnt be a big problem to get through them

DE:HR was the only enjoyable game in 2011 so far, lately games are so bad that getting something new and enjoyable is a big thing for me(honestly playing the same old games constantly can be depressing)

yes, they are. the proof lies in the final boss battle, which can be handled in a multitude of ways and isn't that bad from a gameplay point of view (nevermind the girls), unlike the retarded bullet sponge bullshit in the previous ones.

We don't know how much time, what kind of instructions, and how big a budget they were given.

they advertise their upcoming story dlc with the fact that the bossfight included is developed in-house:
Towards the end of the DLC is a boss fight, which fans won't find as frustrating as those in the main game, Eidos Montreal told Eurogamer.

"We have a boss battle at the end, but it's different from the main game boss battles," Eidos Montreal production coordinator Marc-Andre Dufort said.

"You can actually not kill the boss. You can do a non lethal takedown on him. And you can kill him from afar. You can even kill him without him seeing you. It's more of a bigger challenge than a standard boss fight like we have in many games."

Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
Don't most boss battles come down to:

boss.enemy.size(x,y) = grunt.enemy.size(x,y*2)
boss.enemy.damage = grunt.enemy.damage*2

(ok, maybe that's how they did it 20 years ago.)

Why the hell would anyone pay money for that shit?

Glad to see EIDOS working on the things that made Deus:Ex a great Hybrid cRPG: Boss Fights.

DX's only boss fights were attacking UNATCO agents in the base in the hope of a glitch that would let you actually kill one.

The stealth route would be walking over a cleaner bot to make it go hostile, thereby (sometimes) triggering the soldiers to attack it. Good times.
