Loaded Inc has posted up a preview of Restricted Area based on the recently released demo of the game. Here's a bit about the town you start in:

It is the future and you play one of 4 characters, each with specific skills to build upon. Of course, the demo sends you into the fray with only one character choice, so I do not know what the others look like. In this you assume the identity of a male who goes by the name of Smith. You find yourself in a run down area of a metropolis with various NPC’s standing around town. Each character in town offers some form of service to your character. There are dealers of weapons, body enhancements (cyborg type things), and medical supplies, to name a few. Some characters (only one in the demo) offer jobs. In the demo I was sent off to a barren wasteland to look for a lost item. In order to travel from the city to the mission locations, you can hire a transport NPC. He will drop you where you want for a percentage of your income on the mission. I am not sure if there will be any merc type characters, but I could have used one in the mission.

Smith? Isn't that the dialogue option when you don't want to give your real name?

As for mercs, I had no trouble clearing out the demo's mission area. It's pretty easy once you figure out ranged weapons aren't for close up fighting.
