GameSpot has a preview of Chris Taylor's upcoming hack & slash dungeon romp, Dungeon Siege II, joining many other magazines in anticipation for the game's release. Here's a snippet from the full preview.

Gamers tend to fall into two camps when it comes to Dungeon Siege, the 2002 action role-playing game from Microsoft and developer Gas Powered Games. The first group loved Dungeon Siege for its ambitious attempt to make a Diablo-style, 3D hack-and-slash game that was fun and easy to play. But the second group felt that the game was too automated and linear for its own good, leaving little for the player to do other than just point and click. Well, with Dungeon Siege II on schedule for a release this summer, the big question is whether the Dungeon Siege formula has changed in any way. We got our hands on some early code to see how the game is shaping up, and for what it's worth, so far it feels like a bigger and better Dungeon Siege. Yes, that's a bit nebulous, but we'll try to explain.

I don't think I know anybody from the first camp. What's nice to know is that if you read on, you'll discover that Gas Powered Games has made some strides towards making the game more like Diablo 2 and less like Dungeon Siege, which sounds promising to say the least.

Behind you.
I remember one guy came on to this forum to say that Dungeon Siege was really fun for both him and his mom or something. They might be the only two in that first camp.

I'm not sure how you can play the first one and think it's fun for more than a few days. At first, the graphics might appeal to you and you might be thinking the L3WT HUNT is fun. Eventually, though, you'll figure out that any L3WT you find you won't be able to use for a few hours or it'll be for some other build that you'll never be able to use. You'll also figure out that the whole time you've been playing, the only thing you've really been doing is walking around and equiping or selling new L3WT, because everything else is handled for you.

I hated Dungeon Siege, but if I'd expect anyone to be an expert on cRPGS it would be some dude that went camping alone with his mom.
