There's <A href="http://www.jolt.co.uk/index.php?articleid=4017">a review</A> of <A href="http://www.atari.com/boilingpoint/">Boiling Point</a> over at <A href="http://www.jolt.co.uk">Jolt</a>. It scores a pretty fat <b>8.3/10</b>, despite some niggles and flaws. Here's a bit about playgrounds:
<br>
<blockquote>The fact that there’s no time limit really gives you the opportunity to appreciate the size of the game. At one point, when looking for a guy to fulfil an objective, we went wandering into the wrong room by mistake where we found some old biddie who gave us a mission that took us in a totally new direction. The fact that you have the freedom to do this is not to be sniffed it – it’s a living, breathing world that will quite happily let you live in it without even trying to find your stupid daughter if you don’t want to. Go and learn how to fly a chopper instead – the world is truly your playground.</blockquote>
<br>
Missions from old ladies that don't involve cats is nice - but not realistic!

Play it and you'll be asking for a lot more...like a non-alpha copy of the code, preferrably one thats actually finished, as I just cannot see them being satisfied that they were done with this game.

I love it, but at the same time am baffled and very disappointed at both terrible design decisions and techincal mediocrity(from basic performance to the 3rd person vehicle camera control ), keeping it from being stellar.

Aye the bugs are certainly an issue - Im thinking Ill wait a month or so to see if there are any patches coming to fix the major bugs.

The following comments make the game sound gr8:

"The developers got lazy and reused the same landmarks over and over again. I had to keep checking my map to make sure I didn't accidentally circle back to the same gas station or fruit stand, containing the exact same NPCs, building models and dialogue trees. All with the exact same layout. The first time I came across a firefight between a couple of the games factions I thought it was pretty cool. Now I know every time I see a broken down vehicle on a straight stretch of road a similar firefight is going to break out. Blah."

The same fellow had this to say about the later areas of the game:

"[Graphics-wise] It's like you take a timemachine to Quake 2 era [and there] will be quite goofy turns in the plot, and finally the devs give in and give you endlessly respawning enemies in the last battle, while everything before that has been quite sensible, difficulty-wise. During said respawning, game becomes also much more unstable than before."

Yeh - Im at that end battle right now... its not exactly fun, considering I chose "hard" difficulty... the respawning guys are all within about 100 ft of you - with nowhere to run and hide

and yeh - the way they re-use assets is one of the worst things about the game... it totally kills the immersion

its still worth it tho - its more like an oldschool game from the 80's than anything truly modern

How many hours of gameplay do you guess-timate, space captain?
And is there much room for side-track missions and so on (and if so, does your gameplay estimate take this in to account?)

Thnx in advance.

Like I posted in the other thread on this game, if you dont bee-line it straight to through the end, there seems to be an endless string of questing to do, seemingly from everywhere including little old ladies.

Like I said its terribly neat if it weren't for the miserable game ruining bugs, performance and design. :(

wow the ending is really fuckin anti-climactic - it seems like a cheap setup for a sequel... but really underwhelming

youve been warned

Ah, go on! Spoil it for me. Heck, PM me, if you must.

i sent you one

but yeh, for the last 10 hours i focused on the main quest only... there are hundreds of side quests - its insanely big in that respect

and you might as well do them - the main quest is just incredibly weak

one interesting thing is that the Xenus storyline is NOT related to the main quest at all - so I didnt really figure out anything about that either... but im still waiting on the patch to play through it again properly

A decent patch from Atari? I'll believe it when I see it. The game is getting so little attention I doubt they give a shit about patching it now.
