<a href="http://www.hellgatelondon.com/">Hellgate London</a> gets a <A href="http://www.the-laser.com/hellgate_preview.htm">preview</a> from <A href="http://www.the-laser.com/">The Laser</a>, which basically offers up nothing new. Probably a summary of every other preview to date, but who cares! We got to post something.
<br>
<blockquote>During the game, players can interact with a variety of NPC and human characters online in additional missions, which will offer both solo and cooperative modes. During each mission, players will have to shoot the bad guys and can also collect a variety of items. As you progress through Hellgate: London, you'll earn more powerful spells and can also find additional items to upgrade your character's stats and abilities. <u>While it's an RPG at heart, Flagship haven't neglected the action elements. Players will need fast reflexes and a good trigger finger in order to progress deeper into the game</u>. This will also be reflected in the game's structure, since branching skill paths will open up as you progress through the game. The game's graphics engine is looking quite impressive at this early stage, with richly detailed environments and evocative character designs that should fully take advantage of high-end machines. HellGate: London's story and plot line will take players on a variety of missions ranging from solo excursions to all-out multiplayer battles.</blockquote>

How come none of these previews mentions melee? Maybe in <i>teh fewchure</i> swords and maces have triggers!

Let's get this right - it's an RPG at heart but is really an FPS? I'm confused. It's sounding an awful lot like an FPS with RPG elements. *shrug* Not saying it will be a bad game but the pre-pub is looking a little confused.

It's an RPG roguelike. This guy's writeup is just based on a bunch of his own stupid assumptions about having a 'trigger finger' and 'l33t counterstrike skills', which is the precise opposite of what Bill Roper and the game's developers said it would be. None of the other previews mentioned having a 'trigger finger' as a requirement because it isn't. After all, I'd be more inclined to believe the interview/preview that PC Gamer made about the game over some site called "Laser" that probably pulled all of its data from a variety of sources and hammered them together with a bunch of staples to make it their own 'preview'.

Isn't that the same problem Bloodlines had in reviews? People were expecting combat similar to HL2.

No, it's just that when the monsters come too close you die.

The reason none of these previews mention melee (except for the IGN preview) is because most, if not all of them base their 'preview information' off of other previews, or off the E3 demo movie that was uploaded to the internet. Anyone who was at E3 can attest to seeing the melee combat, though.

I played Hellgate at E3 first the game is in very early stages, it was really hard to gauge gameplay, What they had demoing seemed ridiculously easy, with semi auto targeting(I know it was a demo), it kind of felt like playing an first person shooter in invincible mode, because the rate of fire was so high on my weapons it was hard to tell or notice the difference between firing with a +2 to damage upgrade or a +7 damage upgrade. Again I feel its too early to judge with so many variables left they could tweak. I asked if my strafing was actually helping me dodge projectiles coming in and I was told of course but then I was also told all the hits are based off of die rolls, so maybe you can understand why I left the booth kind of confused.

Just think of Diablo 2 in first person, eh? I don't see what's so difficult about that concept. You can dodge enemy projectiles, but they can't dodge yours just by moving around because it is roll-based. Oh man the complexity.

Deus Ex is now a roguelike lolololol

Deus Ex didn't have randomized maps, missions, monsters, or loot. It didn't have auto-aiming or roll-based hits, either. Stop being a dumb fuck.

You can straffe in Restricted Area as well.

Ultima Underworld wasn't a rogue-like, but Dungeon Hack was.

Exitium is right though, being able to dodge a projectile was in Diablo and Diablo 2, so there's nothing really new here. It's just one of the concessions you make when you're doing a real time combat system versus the typical player-move-everything-else-move-repeat nature of most older rogue-likes. When everything happens contingent on the player pressing a key, you can't really do manual dodging unless you want to make a flight time for projectiles that's longer than one "turn". That would be a bad idea, because the player would never, ever get hit in a system like that unless that player just wanted to be hit or was in a single width hallway.

Accident Or Intent

Accident Or Intent

... you'll earn more powerful spells and can also find additional items to upgrade your character's stats and abilities. ...
Holy Prizes Galore!

A fantasy medieval universe dropped onto a contemporary London "game board".

Random mixing of imagery to garb a shooter's virtual blood feast, or calculated package to maximize the market appeal.

Upgrades by finding "items", not "stat points" but "items". A wonder if these magic beans are mere steroids, or the minimal plot dilemmas of Alice when confronted with
""Eat me"" ""Drink Me"".
Remember, Grace hints ""... one makes you larger ..."".

Pigs rooting for acorns and truffles. Gifted, special, or merely visually impaired porkers. We are all waiting for that "whether" report.

Rogue? Appears like the reward system of that maze moving muncher, PAC MAN!

Now, if the pigs, the player characters, are not "blind" then finding "A" reward will not be mere, ... luck.

Now, if the designers of this game and those marketeers promoting it are not blindly flailing about,
there may actually be a game in the box. Too many boxes have been proven 'virtually' empty in these last days of 'bait and switch', ye ol' times of bore-(dom).

Can one suppose with all this design confusion that there be a hint of design integrity in the product.

Will a 'game' be in the box.

From this thread, some convey that the reviews are based on trailer (trash?) MOVIES and a BETA demo. This shallow insipid slackness must be 'state of the art' in these ye' ol' times of 'boar'-(dom). Does this state of unfinished work, this "commodity's' pretense of achievement reflect a - run and gun -, wham bam thank you mam, nature of the game entertainment 'industry' as a whole?

I am to base any purchase, that - it - has X number of cups holders (most likely low cut DD) and has CHEESE in the mix (the tits in the cup --- boulder holders).

The demonstrated design integrity. Mix and match medieval imagery. Big F-ing guns of Doom, and a melee function ... to be named later ....

The seemingly confused shot gunning of all air breathers, with all things 'game-y'
(consider all nuances of the term ''well hung'') ... in stimulus exiting ACRONYMS!" "Hellgate" appears to be a conceptual 2-D maze of yore, any reward the wary buyer uncovers may be more likely accidental then intentional.

Intension? ""Follow the money"" to discover if hype equals sales or content is king. Is specific cynicism unfounded .... be there an actual game in the box.

That's just it, 4too. The trailer thingy actually shows melee in use, yet none of the damned previews even mention it. Fuck guns, I want a big club or something to beat up demons with.

The male and FEmale wallpaper downloads cited above, appear to depict armored entities with what appears to be - melee - weapons.

Granted the FEmale entity is more fashionably armored to conform to the ""local standards"". Perhaps the "'weapon accessory'' she models is mere theme and allusion,
for the truly fashion conscious to appreciate, and not even a hint to what the actual game content might be.

Saint P. I will endeavor to think good thoughts concerning HG:L and clubs. It is always, most, self assuring when one can choose their weapons of preference in the righteous transformation of demons into road kill.
